Minneapolis South to Berkeley!

Hi everyone!
We’re from Minneapolis South High School – a public school and member of the Urban Debate League! This year we’ve been lucky to have the opportunity to travel to national tournaments throughout the Midwest and compete against some of the best teams in the nation. We’ve experienced quite a bit of success – our first years (Gabe Chang-Deutsch and Anton Jahn-Vavrus) won the Michigan Novice tournament, and despite not debating together for the majority of the year Eiset Mebrahtu and Marie Stebbings (South MS) have made it to an impressive TWO bid rounds.
The funding we receive from our school has run out but we don’t want the season to end. We’re hoping to raise enough money to attend one more tournament – the 2018 Cal Invitational at University of California - Berkeley! The tournament would be a chance for us to grow as debaters and face off against some of the best teams around the nation. It would also be a chance for South MS to get a bid to the Tournament of Champions – the most competitive and celebrated tournament of the year.
Debate has become an integral part of each of our lives – it inspires us to be critical thinkers and activists which informs the way we perceive the world. As members of the Minnesota Urban Debate League we have learned the importance of building strong communities and advocating for the beliefs and values we hope to instill in future generations. Our debaters find time to spend upwards of fifteen hours a week working on debate (reading critical literature, doing practice debates, etc.) in addition to holding down jobs, internships and advocating for education reform at the MPS School Board.
Any donation helps out! It would go towards the travel and housing costs for the tournament. We don’t want money to be a barrier to success on our team so any funding comes from our school foundation or donors like you.
