Mindy's Recovery

Donation protected
On Wednesday, January 17th, Mindy Carlson was found unresponsive by her husband in their home. She was taken to Centerpoint Hospital and then quickly transferred to Research Medical Center. Finally, after hours of waiting, the family was told Mindy was in a diabetic coma and was likely unconscious most of the day. Her blood sugar was over 900 and her blood pressure was dangerously low. Unfortunately, the diabetic coma was not the only thing Mindy was suffering from. During the time she was unconscious, she suffered traumatic injuries to her face. Due to the facial injuries, she was transferred again to the trauma ICU at KU Medical Center.

The first several days, the doctors have been focusing on getting Mindy’s vitals stable. Her A1c test, which indicates the average level of blood sugar over the last 2-3 months, showed a result of 16.7! The ICU nurses had never seen anyone with higher than a 12. This number means Mindy has been suffering for months with undiagnosed extreme hyperglycemia. The doctors kept her heavily sedated the first couple of days until they could find the right balance of medications to regulate her blood sugar. They have been slowly weaning her off different medications and machines as her body begins taking over again. She is still considered critical, but the doctors are beyond pleased with her improvements. All scans and tests of her organs and heart have come back normal! Mindy has been alert and responsive to questions. She is unable to speak, but can move her head and hands to respond.

Although she is slowly improving, she has a very long road of recovery. Later this week she will have one of many surgeries to begin reconstructing her face. Along with the numerous surgeries, she will have to be on diabetic medication for the rest of her life. This tragic event will undoubtedly cause Mindy and her family a significant financial strain. If you are able, please give what you can to help Mindy with her medication and treatment expenses, as well as everyday expenses as she will be unable to work for an indeterminate time. If you are unable to give financially, please pray for Mindy’s recovery, physically and emotionally.
