Help Mindy Moellmer Fight Cancer
First, let us say that Mindy Moellmer is a brilliant, beautiful 36 year old woman who loves animals and helping other people. It is with a measure of sadness and disbelief that we now need to share that Mindy has been diagnosed with Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia (APL), an uncommon and aggressive form of blood cancer that comes on devastatingly fast and is deadly without treatment. It often strikes people in their 30s and 40s with little notice until symptoms reach the crisis stage. Fortunately, Mindy was diagnosed before it was too late and once treatment has begun APL has good prospects for remission and even cure. But, since Mindy cannot work and has no discretionary income, she is unable to face this crisis alone. She is currently at University Medical Center in Tucson and is expected to spend 2-3 weeks as an inpatient. Following this, the doctors have told her that she’s looking at 6-8 months of chemotherapy, five days per week. Unfortunately, the nearest qualified cancer treatment center, which is up to date on her unusual form of Leukemia, is 3.5 hours from her home. As the chemo will be given five days a week, there is no possible way for her to return home and she could be in Tucson for the next nine months. We would love to be there to take her to chemo and help but the nearest family members live more than 450 miles away. Mindy needs help with local living arrangements, transportation and other expenses related to staying near the hospital. She will also need help with the money she will owe for the portions of her treatment that are not covered by Medicare/Medicaid.
Despite now facing a devastating cancer diagnosis, Mindy is optimistic about the prospect for remission and eventual cure. She has informed us that she feels deeply that continuing to fight for the cure to cancer is going to be so important in her future. She really hopes that she can use her disease and survival to support future cancer fighters facing more and would love if everyone else did too. We can’t wait for the day when she kicks APL’s butt and does just that. We are so very hopeful that with the right treatment, and help from each and every one of you, her cancer will go into total remission and she will be able to live for a very long time. We love our sister so much and are grateful for any assistance that can be provided to help her get through this.
We think that $10,000 will be sufficient to cover her expenses while she undergoes treatment. Once she’s able to return home, any funds left unspent will be donated to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, whose mission is to help fund research to put an end to all forms of blood cancer.
