Miller's Crew Classroom Crash

Our Story

The story behind Miller’s Crew started in 2003 when our son Miller was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Just like all families hit with this life changing news, we went through denial, grief, guilt, anger and finally “why us”.  After a couple of quiet days, we realized that God only gives us what we can handle and this disorder was not about us but about Miller and we needed to figure out how to help him. My wife Kim, a licensed speech pathologist, went into super mom mode. She had Miller tested by a Pediatric Neurologist at UNC and the Autism Specialist at the University of Vanderbilt. She researched every available treatment; Early Intervention, Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Verbal Behavior Therapy, Applied Behavior Analysis, Relationship Development Intervention, and Pivotal Response Treatment to name a few. She was up every night reading articles and books trying to figure out the best plan for Miller. The process took years of trial and error. Not only did she formulate a lifelong plan for Miller, she developed a passion for helping special needs students and she uses everything she learned to help each and every child she works with. She has developed a reputation for getting the most out of her kids. She has become an advocate for special needs kids, a mentor to therapist, and a consultant to teachers and parents state wide.

Now that Miller is older and preparing to graduate from high school, we are faced with many questions. What program would be next? What will he do during the day? Will he be employed? Where will he work? What happens when we are no longer here? These questions worry all parents of young adults with disabilities. Kim’s calling was to start vocational training to prepare young adults with developmental disabilities for life after high school. Miller’s Crew will connect members with their community through ongoing training, apprenticeship programs, and community employment.

Phase 1 is to set up Vocational Classrooms in each of the Cumberland County High Schools. We need materials and equipment to train students with disabilities necessary job skills for employment. Your support will provide self confidence, self sufficiency, and hope for the future for these students and thier families.

Miller’s Crew is ready to Connect, Train, and Employ!
