Milk Money for the Magical Moon

Milk Money

Hidden away close to the shore in Marshfield MA, you will find a small farm. Mind you, this isn’t just any run of the mill farm, but a magical farm; home to the Magical Moon Foundation, a foundation focused on empowering children battling life threatening illnesses. While you will encounter elements one might expect on a farm, from animals, gardens, even an enormous barn, among the many unique attributes that set it apart from every other is the energy. Palpable, it can be sensed upon approach. Energy flows through you as you venture around, like a living entity. At the heart is Donna Green. Her ability to embrace, cherish and love is not lost on anyone who makes a visit.

Our experience with the farm began just over three years ago, after the devastating news that our oldest son, Evan, had been diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma. Shattered, shaken and downright traumatized cannot even begin to express the rollercoaster of emotions that kicked off with that single word: Cancer. Learning of the farm, Donna, and its close proximity to our home, we ventured forth, completely unaware of the magic we would encounter.

From the moment of our first arrival at the farm, and throughout the battle Evan endured, subsequent trips back to farm revitalized, strengthened us to keeping us going. Early on during Evan’s visits to the farm he was knighted, dubbed Sir Evan the Dragon Lord. With this knighthood, Evan’s true spirit, determination and ability to fight became all the more evident. Not without struggle, difficult times, and long dark nights did Evan prevail in his battle with Childhood Cancer. After almost a year undergoing chemotherapy, radiation treatment and major surgery, our Dragon Lord emerged cancer free.

The years that followed, while cancer free, have brought new and endless challenges. In many ways Evan is in uncharted territory; “the boy who lived” to borrow from one of our favorite stories. From the onset of diagnosis, the prognosis wasn’t good. Had this happened only a few years earlier, Evan would more than likely be an angel looking down. By the grace of God, the doctors, specialists, nurses, family, friends and total strangers, Evan survived. All along, the power and presence of the Magical Moon farm carried Evan and our family through our journey.

Now, 3 years and 6 months removed from that fateful diagnosis at Children’s Hospital, Evan is- to the untrained eye- your average eleven year old; eleven going on sixteen, that is. With grit that few possess, Evan managed to miss a year of school and not look back! Continued trips back to the farm provided an energy boost if you will, an opportunity to rejuvenate. With the barn, gardens, fish ponds, bunny rabbits, the farm's magic always provides that extra lift to keep you going. All the while, Donna stands at the center of all this magic, always willing to go that extra mile to empower Evan and every child that needs a boost.

Evan, Sir Evan the Dragon Lord, is once again at a point where more than ever he needs the Magical Moon farm and your help. With cancer in the rearview mirror, Evan is struggling with mobility; a daily challenge impacting everything from sleep to sitting at school. As part of the cancer treatment process, there is a phase called Local Control. Local control is when surgeons operate to remove the cancer riddled tissue and the surrounding area, after a course of chemotherapy. In Sir Evan the Dragon Lord’s case, Ewing's Sarcoma- a primary bone cancer- had taken over the left side of his pelvis. Local Control resulted in the removal of the entire left half of pelvis bone.

The surgical team, the dream team, comprised of surgeons from both Boston Children’s Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital worked on Sir Evan the Dragon Lord for 8 hours. When they were done, a makeshift pelvis had been fabricated, from a donor ankle bone, mesh like material, plates and screws; heck ya this kid had gotten some hardware! The dream team not only saved Sir Evan the Dragon Lord, they gave him a chance to be a kid again with mobility. On surgery day, a vigil was held at the Magical Moon Farm, sending energy Sir Evan’s way. He pulled through like a champ!

After an extended recovery, consisting of time in a brace, wheelchair, and followed by crutches, Sir Evan was mobile without any assistance. While his gait was changed, he was back walking on his own and cancer free, with the world for the taking. As soon as he was able, Sir Evan the Dragon Lord took it upon himself to show off on the giant rope swing at the farm. Much to the chagrin of his mother and father, Sir Evan owned that swing. Every time higher and higher, stronger and stronger. Recharged by the farm and visits with Donna.

Becoming a knight, honor and privilege is not without responsibility: a mission.  A mission to help others. Sir Evan and I had discussed writing a book many times; his story is so amazing, it could help so many going through the same situations. He was not feeling it. Food was another thought, as Sir Evan’s struggles with the fallout from chemotherapy still affects his capacity- and willingness- to eat enough. With continued visits to the farm, his mission became clear. A core strengthening room at the farm, in the Milk Room of the Magical Moon barn. Who better to lead a mission of strength than the strongest person I have ever met, my son, Sir Evan the Dragon Lord.

Sir Evan’s mission is very personal. While cancer free, the mobility challenges persist. As he grows and his body matures, his rebuilt hip has become uncomfortable. With an ever worsening gait, coupled with a relapse to crutches when he is really sore, Sir Evan the Dragon Lord is struggling more and more. By strengthening core muscles, he hopes to prolong the inevitable next surgery. While he is still growing and approaching puberty, just the thought of another invasive surgery is off-putting, to say the least. Sir Evan the Dragon Lord’s mission is to strengthen not only his core, but core and soul of other children with similar challenges.

Sir Evan the Dragon Lord has teamed up with Donna for his mission at the Magical Moon Farm, to build a core strengthening room in the old Milk Room of the barn. The farm was once a working dairy farm; the room used to store milk, the Milk Room, will be the home of the core strengthening room. Not only will this room help Evan with the exercises needed to improve mobility, it will enable and empower other children with mobility issues as the result of a childhood illness.

Sir Evan the Dragon Lord and Donna cannot complete this mission alone. Once again we are looking to family, friends and strangers to help Sir Evan the Dragon Lord. Funds are needed to overhaul the Magical Moon barn’s Milk Room, to transform it to the core strengthening room that he and Donna have envisioned. Any and every little bit will help, that is why we are asking for Milk Money, for Sir Evan the Dragon Lord, for kids fighting the good fight, and for the Magical Moon Farm. Please help Sir Evan the Dragon Lord complete his mission to build the core strengthening room!
