Miles for Mentoring

Donation protected
On September 1st, I will be doing an 8-mile swim from Bridgeport to Valley Forge National Park and back in the Schuylkill River. I am very excited to be using this endurance race to assist with raising money to start a mentoring program for students that attend Devers Elementary School, in York City.

Students in mentoring programs benefit from caring and consistent relationships with adults.  Benefits of students having a mentor include:
- Increased high school graduation rates
- Better attitude about school
-Healthier lifestyle choices
-Higher self-esteem
-Higher college enrollment rates
-Higher educational aspirations.

Self-confidence and grades rise, while drug use and truancy rates lower. The consistent, enduring presence of a caring adult in a young person’s life can be the difference between staying in school or dropping out, making healthy decisions, or engaging in risky behaviors, and realizing one’s potential or failing to achieve one’s dreams.

The presence of a mentor is essential to the future success of youth and to society overall. Too many young people –including nearly nine million at-risk youth — do not have access to a mentoring relationship. While the mentoring field has expanded and gained incredible momentum in the last 20 years, more must be done to meet the needs that young people.

Why I am Choosing to Help
I have travelled to other countries to teach English, repair a school, and help people with disabilities. I spent time in New York City teaching. I have worked with Special Olympics and Junior Achievement. I have a running list of people I have helped, but an even bigger list of people I still want to help. This swim is the perfect opportunity to incorporate helping people with my love for a physical challenge. After engaging with York city elementary students over the past year and spending time in the city this summer because of an internship, I have realized I want to do more for the community I live in.

How YOU Can Help
I am asking for friends, family, city lovers, and just all around awesome people to donate money towards this marathon swim.  You could give a flat amount, donate by the mile, or even by how many laps in a 25 yards pool that would be (528 ha ha ha). All proceeds go directly to this future program! Checks and cash are accepted. Prayers as I take on 8 miles in open water are also accepted, and encouraged :-). Please email me at [email redacted] with any questions.

Help me implement  a strong mentoring program for student's in York City!
