I was offered a wonderful opportunity to be a part of the Narnia Festival in Italy this summer as a soloist for Pergolesi's Stabat Mater (one of my dream pieces), along with some solo roles in the opera scenes program and concert programs. There I will also receive a real singer's training with masterclasses, Italian language classes, yoga and such.
I have done many programs like this as a pianist, but I've never officially been on the other side, even though I have been singing all my life and I've done it professionally for the past 10 years. I decided to go for it, but I will need financial help. Apart from hunting for donors and trying to organize house concerts, GoFundMe proved to be a successful resource for many, so I decided to give it a try. I need to raise approximately $3200 by June 1st to cover all of my expenses. On June 2nd, I will turn 32. If 32 people donated a $100, I would make my goal. If 64 people gave $50, I would still make my goal, etc... You get the idea. Any donation is enormously appreciated. Even a little goes a long way.
I promise that this will be the only time I am paying for an opportunity like this. Having been in this business for a while now, I realize that I need to make this kind of effort in order to break into the system that just won't see me as anything else other than a pianist. Even Narnia was confused by my application when they saw my resume, so I had to ask them: please, just listen to my recordings! And you guys know I can sing and how much I love to do it!
My piano teacher who has taught me for 10 years in Serbia, heard me perform as a singer one day and said: "You know, you play piano really well, but after I saw you do this, I think you should really be singing." This has happened more than once. It seems that my whole life I kept missing signs along the way in order to focus on what I felt was a secure choice. Then I became an expert in what I do as an accompanist, I got a doctorate and a real job in the field. I went all the way, as far as possible, only to realize that I limited myself. This is how people will see me now and this is who I am to them. Except that this is not my personal truth.
I am positive that Narnia Festival will create many more singing opportunities for me. Every summer program I did so far has helped me in the long run. I realized that I can't hold myself back anymore, be afraid to offend with my talent and pretend that I am a one dimensional artist. I am simply not. Once I am allowed to express that, I will fully be who I am. Then, I'll be able to positively impact my environment, and that is my true power!
