Mildred's Surgery

Mildred Esweeka is like an adopted daughter to me. She is exactly 1 week younger than my son, John, who died 4 years ago. I was able to help Mildred finish college instead of John.
I first met Mildred in 2012 through my Kenyan friend, Amram Musungu. He was the branch president of the Swahili speaking branch of the LDS church in Salt Lake City and introduced me over the phone to Mildred, who was an orphan living in Kenya. Because of her great love for learning and desire to improve her life, I decided to help her go to college. She has been an excellent student and worked very hard to graduate with an IT degree.
During her time spent at the university we had many conversations about gospel principles and the Book of Mormon. After studying the gospel carefully and walking many miles to church each Sunday, she decided to get baptized and has been preparing to serve a mission ever since graduating. Unfortunately Mildred has encountered one disaster after another during the past 18 months including a roll-over car accident, coming down with shingles and then malaria, a detached retina and then a violent robbery where all her clothing, possessions and mission documents were stolen.
Most recently the presidential elections in Kenya have caused great terror and violence throughout the country. Many neighborhoods have been targeted by President Kenyatta's private military squad with teargas and violent murders to insure he is re-elected and his very corrupt government stays in power. Unfortunately, Mildred's neighborhood was invaded by this brutal squad, and during the panic of teargas and machine gun fire, several of her close friends were shot and killed. Mildred was also shot in the leg, but pretended to be dead until the air cleared and a friend was able to help her get to a hospital.
She underwent a very expensive surgery to save her leg, but now a month later she has developed a bone infection called osteomyelitis. This is a very serious condition and requires an immediate, emergency surgery scheduled for Friday, December 15th as well as several weeks of intravenous antibiotics and intensive hospital care. We estimate the total cost to be $35,000. A deposit of $3500 is needed before the surgery can begin on Friday.
