Mike Shay Medical Expenses

Donation protected
Hi Family and Friends,
As you may have heard Mike has under gone a recent medical hardship and we are looking for support as he and his wife, Linda, incur many medical and living expenses now and in the coming years.

TIMELINE
Thursday, October 5th
Mike was doing his normal morning workout at the YMCA when he felt pain and numbness in his right leg. Assuming it was a pinched nerve, he went to his chiropractor, who immediately sent Mike to the Muscatine emergency room. ER doctors evaluated his leg and it was determined the issue was a dangerous blood clot beyond their expertise and sent him by ambulance to University of Iowa Hospitals.

Thursday night into early Friday morning, Mike underwent an extensive, 9 hour surgery in an attempt to save his leg. The doctors made an incision from his groin down to his foot to open his leg and clean out his veins; this was a very painful surgery and last resort to save his foot/leg.

Saturday, October 7th
His doctors continued to closely monitor Mike after his first surgery to see if blood flow had started again. Sadly, it was determined the first surgery was not successful due to excessive damage done to the veins in his leg. The difficult decision was made to remove the lower portion of Mike's right leg, just below the knee.

The doctors amputated below the knee knowing it was possible they would need to amputate higher on the leg depending on the recovery process. Their ability to save the knee joint significantly decreases Mike's recovery time and artificial limb costs.

October 8th-13th
Mike spent the week recovering from both his extremely difficult surgeries while doctors monitored his right leg. Hopes were for the lower portion of the leg to regenerate and heal.

During this week Mike has also experienced an issue with his kidneys and has been on intermittent dialysis to assist their recovery. He continues to be monitored for this situation.

Saturday, October 14th
Unfortunately, the lower portion of the leg was not regenerating as the doctor's expected and could have become dangerously infected. The difficult but necessary decision was made to remove higher up on the leg a few inches above his right knee. Mike underwent his 3rd extensive surgery to remove this portion of his leg.

This 3rd surgery had gone well and the doctors were pleased with the process. He will need to be closely monitored over the coming weeks at U of I Hospitals while the wound heals, his kidneys begin to recover, and his overall health improves.

We will continue to update on his progress.

ROAD TO RECOVERY
Mike faces a very long road to recovery. Compounding matters in his right leg, doctor's have located a blood clot in his left leg which will likely require surgery in the coming days, weeks, or months.

Mike had already faced a long road to recovery and unfortunately, the removal of the leg above the knee increases Mike's recovery time, expenses, and difficulty of his rehabilitation. At 69 years old on Halloween, Mike will likely not be able to live at his existing home of 34 years. Upon discharge from the hospital, he will need to move into a rehabiliation center while he learns how to move with one leg and then a new permanent, disability friendly home.

Eventually Mike will receive an artificial limb. This will incur more costs and rehabilitation for him over the coming months and years.

We are looking for support in this difficult time.

Thank you,
The Shays
