Most Unfortunate Circumstances

Thank you for visiting and providing support for our dad who is struggling with complications due to muscular dystrophy. Michael Pace is 68 years old, diagnosed with Facioscapulohumeral dystrophy in 2006.   He was maintaining a practice as a marriage and family therapist up until 5 months ago when complications from the disease resulted in hospitalization.

He provided mental health counseling for numerous individuals and couples for over 30 years. In the past 6 years he had to additionally provide care and services for our mom, his wife of over 40 years who was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimers disease. As an independent practitioner and the only one able to work, he had to cover any expenses that his insurance would not cover to adequately care for himself and our mom.

In April, after spending weeks on oxygen treatment 24/7, he was hospitalized for CO2 toxicity. He has not been home since. He has been hospitalized twice, gone to two rehabilitation facilities, and is currently in a nursing facility. He had to have a Tracheotomy done to allow for easier access to oxygen and care in case of a crisis. In his mind he had every intention of resuming his life, going to work, living at home etc., but was met with numerous obstacles that prevented his hopes from becoming a reality.  He used his retirement funds to keep up with his bills and other expenses. Five plus months later, he has almost depleted his funds and he is not going home due to the amount of care he needs. His house is being put up for sale and the contents of the house will be sold at an estate sale.

In June, we made a decision to have our 66 year old mother placed in a memory care facility. She could no longer live in the home, due to a significant and rapid decline in her ability to take care of her own basic needs.  Our parents have not seen each other since the end of March and most likely won't see each other again. In a short period of time, our father has lost his independence, ability to work, his home, and his wife.  This has been a nightmare scenario for our family that continues to worsen as time goes on.  In an effort to lessen the financial burden he carries, we ask for your support.  Please pass it on.  Thank you.
