12-6-17 Update from Susie:

Today was phenomenal day! Michael Gomez was very alert and speaking with us! He struggles with responses that require many words but can verbalize a few words at a time. During physical therapy, he stood and got seated in a chair with assistance. This is all so very promising!

We are still in ICU but I'm very, very hopeful he'll be moved tomorrow.

Our next hurdle to overcome is to continue to strengthen his throat muscles so he no longer would need the feeding tube.

The best part of today is when my husband put his arm around me and hugged me for the first time in 5 days. My heart soared.  ❤ Please continue to pray as we take this journey to recovery.

UPDATE FROM SUSIE:
Today was a good day being surrounded by loved ones. Positive Thoughts; Positive Results! Late last night the doctors started to wean Michael Gomez off the breathing tube and I'm happy to say that he was extubated at 12pm earlier today and has been breathing on his own successfully. Mike is receiving breathing treatment to help breakup the build-up of gunk in his airway, which our current concern.
Mike is also more alert and responsive. He has some movement in his extremities on the right side which is phenomenal given the severity of his stroke.

We have many more milestones to achieve but Mike is a fighter and he is fighting really hard. I know he feels our prayers and love. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for the support, prayers, and your generous donations. I don't have the words to express my gratitude.

Mike is a wonderful husband, to Susie, a wonderful father to Carly 21, Ava 3 and Mila is 11 months old, and a wonderful friend to all who know him.
Mike was having episodes where he couldn't speak for 30 seconds at a time.  He had an MRA on Wednesday, November 29th which revealed a 95% blockage in his left carotid artery.  He had surgery to clear the blockage, but during the surgery a part of the clot traveled to his brain and he had a stroke.  He was transported to the stroke center so the clot could be removed.  Susie was able to talk to him and hold his hand, before transportation.

They were able to remove the blood clot from his brain and on December 2nd, they were able to remove the breathing tube, to assess the damage caused by the stroke. He was alert and able comprehend most of what was being said , but has limited mobility and speech capability which will require therapy to improve.  He was able to get something out that sounded like "Hey Babe" when Susie went into the room.

Very early this morning, December 3rd, there was a small setback, when Mike was having some trouble breathing and need to be intubated again.   Xrays showed some fluid in his lungs, so he is on antibotics to ward off infections/pneumonia.  They also did a CT Scan which did show a little swelling so the doctors will monitor closely to make sure that subsides.

Mike is a very strong man that has already fought cancer and won.  His body and brain are getting some needed rest which will help with the healing process.

While Mike does have insurance the co-pays and patient portions are still going to be very high, and they will still have the monthly fees of keeping the girls in daycare.

The Gomez family does so much to help others, and it is now our turn to help them.  There is no telling how long Mike's recovery could take,  so if you can spare anything to help this family through this tough time, I promise you, it will be greatly appreciated it.
