My entire life can be described in one sentence: It did not go as planned, and that is ok. When I was 12 years old I was diagnosed with Frederick’s Ataxia, which slowly progressed into my current status of being confined to a wheelchair with a few challenges related to my speech and hearing. Do not get the wrong impression of me however! I have no cognitive difficulties, and by looking at me, whether it is at the gym, or engaging in a work-related project, you will notice that I am a very determined individual with an admirable work ethic.
My persistence and hard work has been noticed by Northeastern Illinois University, and landed me a spot in the Master's Program in Computer Science! Although I am very excited to begin my new journey, I am located in unfamiliar territory in the city of Chicago. I love the atmosphere of the busy city, however, traveling from point A to B causes me to to rely on a powerchair to safely travel. My current powerchair, I call, "The Tank," is a very bulky and uncomfortable that was donated for a temporary fix to gain mobility.
Recently, I have been researching a countless number of powerchairs to use to navigate through Chicago's terrain , and I finally found a chair that has the power to maneuver around obsticals, has multiple safety features, and is designed to be comfortable!
The Whill Model Ci - http://whill.us/model-ci/
During my search, I became very knowledgable on the measurments and specifications of a variety of powerchairs, but I also paid close attention on how Mobility Distributors make money on selling these types of chairs. It blew my mind how much extra they charge to simply be the middle man to place the order. Therefore, I will order it directly from the wholesaler, which eliminates the middle man completely.
I found out that my insurance company will not cover the cost and unfortunately, I can't afford this powerchair. I am seeking $4500 to cover the cost of the actual chair and its features. I did test drive the Whill Model Ci to make sure it can handle everyday activities, and it is Awesome!!!!!!!!
This new powerchair will not only help me navigate on campus, but will allow me to feel confident traveling to and from internships, and ultimately, a career.
I am very grateful to have the love and support from family and friends while I continue to advance my education and studies. I regularly aim high to achieve my goals in life and having this powerchair will allow me to gain independence and endure any obstacles thrown my way.
Thank you very much for your support!!! Any donation is greatly appreciated, and brings me one step closer to receiving a new, life changing powerchair!
