Mike Stagg's Next Chapter

Donation protected
Mike Stagg suffered a debilitating stroke on February 12. Since then he's been staying in facilities in New Orleans, working hard on recovery. He's received intensive physical therapy to regain use of his right side, but funds for that therapy are in danger of drying up. There are other promising treatments available, including a stem cell clinical trial, but these would have to be paid for with private funds. Mike's also receiving therapy for aphasia, which challenges his written and oral language expression; that need is ongoing.

We can't know what the next chapter of Mike’s life holds, but he’s currently unable to work. And of course his medical expenses are mounting. I've set up this fund with the hope of raising $25,000 by year's end, to be used for further therapies or a mobility device such as a power standing wheelchair.

Why you should give: Mike has been raising hell on behalf of Louisiana's people for years — a warrior in the trenches.  Always, overarching concerns with human dignity, racial justice, community, fairness, and unity have guided his activities. If you’ve ever worked with Mike on any project, you can’t help but be aware of how deep his commitment to these causes runs.

Many of you met Mike in his public life ranging from candidate for public office to newspaper reporter to radio producer. Others are aware of his tireless work on social and policy issues such as women’s rights, environmental crises, corporate power, and LUS Fiber. And if you're friends, you've probably been the beneficiary of Mike’s generosity when you've simply needed help with something.

Mike’s career has been aimed not at achieving rank, status, or financial rewards but at truth-telling and holding accountable those whose actions are harmful, to our benefit. He’s pursued these goals through his jobs and his campaigns — and sometimes he's supported them by driving for Uber.  Before the stroke, Mike was working on an important book about abuses by the Jindal administration.  No doubt he'd love to get back to it.

Please reach into your pockets and contribute to this drive to help with Mike's medical expenses. And help this fund-raising campaign gain traction by talking it up and sharing the link on social media.

Special thanks to Mimi Methvin and Mike's daughter Lily Stagg for the ongoing care and support they're giving him!
