Mike Nissly - Share and Care

Donation protected
Mike Nissly was involved in a serious bike accident on May 27th.  He was life flighted and underwent a 5 hour surgery to repair a fractured T1 vertebrae.  Mike’s spinal cord was compressed during the accident and that has resulted in paralysis from the chest down.  In the beginning of June, Mike and his wife April were flown out to Craig Hospital in Colorado which specializes in spinal cord injuries and have been in rehabilitation since then.  During his stay, they received countless emotional encouragement from their family and friends.

Mike and April have completed their rehabilitation and they are ready to begin their new normal in life.  The good news is that Mike has use of his arms, maintains his positive outlook on the future and most importantly they have persevered this life changing situation.  Mike and April are now in the process of transitioning back to Iowa Falls but to do that, many changes need to occur.   Their home will need to be renovated for wheelchair accessibility including adding lifts, modifying door entrances, adding storage, and lowering countertops to name a few items.  In addition, they will be purchasing a wheelchair and specialized vehicle.  To put this in the financial terms, many expenses are not covered by insurance or non-profit support organizations and will easily top $50,000.

As members of Eta Chapter Alpha Gamma Rho, we understand the importance of our fraternal bond.  Mike Nissly has been the model alumni as he has selflessly given back to 201 Gray driven by his passion for Agriculture and our house.  Mike has served as our alumni board Treasurer for many years ensuring the alumni corporation and educational foundation are in sound financial standing.  Beyond that, Mike has played an instrumental role in our renovation projects (most notable the 2nd Century campaign), legacy fund, fundraising campaigns, is an active 201 Gray financial supporter, in-direct collegiate advising, ISU athletics supporter and the list goes on.

Many times life takes unexpected turns.  The opportunity is how we as a fraternity respond and give back to enable Mike and April a smooth transition while easing their financial challenges.  As members of 201 Gray Ave, we have been blessed to be a part of something very special and now is our time to step up to the plate, come together as one and assist Mike and April as they begin a new chapter in their lives.   It is important to note that Mike’s class has already stepped up to the plate to raise in excess of $16,000.

In closing, thank you for your support and consideration of this request.  Please share this information with your classes to ensure everyone has visibility.  We will keep this campaign running until Homecoming on October 27th where we will present your donations to Mike and April to support their needs.
