Mike McGinn was one of us, the Class of 1974 of Stuyvesant High School. Bright, sharp, funny, a raconteur, a kind friend and loving husband to Bernadette and father to Abraham (named for Abe Baumel), Mike was a force majeure in our Manhattan gatherings since 2009.
The past few years were marked with many health challenges for him, and after a very difficult few months, on April 5th, 2018, Mike passed away.
GoFundMe suggests this campaign should explain what Mike meant to me. He was a friend who made me feel so fortunate to have developed a friendship with him. We scarcely knew each other in Stuy, but the past 8 years made up for that. I was always happy to hear from him, delighted that he called just to catch up, to talk about what was going on with his health, even when he sounded blue after weeks in the hospital awaiting a pacemaker. The last time I spoke with him, I didn't think it would be the last, and was hoping to visit him in the spring, since he'd lost his mobility and ability to drive.
But this isn't about what Mike meant to me, it's about what he meant to us all and what we meant to him. At our many local gatherings we could count on Mike to keep our discussions lively and loud, peppered with reminiscences of fast times at Stuyvesant High, about which I naively knew nothing.
"Our strong bond can ne'er be broken, Formed in Stuyv'sant High" is our school's alma mater. We all share a special bond, no matter our backgrounds, our beliefs, our religions, our politics, and Mike was an integral part of our group, keeping those bonds strong.
In this vein, this campaign was created to help Bernadette and Abe with expenses in the next few weeks, from medical expenses to funeral expenses to basic needs. It was created to honor a dear friend.
The funds raised will be sent to Bern as soon as the campaign reaches the goal of $2500, and if the goal is exceeded, then we'll keep it going. Getting the funds to her by April 30th is the goal. Thank you for helping and for being a friend.
