Mike Janicek was completing his daily 20 km bicycle ride on May 23, 2018 when an unleashed large dog came out of the bushes in an area where it was suppose to be on a leash. Mike had no time to react and upon hitting the dog went over the handle bars. He damaged the C3, C4, C5, and C7 vertebrae. Had he not been wearing his helmet the doctors told Mike that he likely would not have lived. Mike was rushed to the U of A hospital where the initial prognosis was that he would never walk again. He had no feeling or movement below his neck. After a month in the hospital he has been told that he may walk again with aids but they are looking at a minimum two year rehabilitation process. With great determination he has been able to touch his chin with his right thumb. He still has no feeling in his arms or legs.
He will be moving to the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital this week to begin the next stage of the fight of his life. Mike has been a good friend, co-worker and supervisor to many over the past 30 years. I hope that we can reach or exceed the goal set out and let Mike know we are there to support him in this battle.
As Mike was a contractor and has no company disability plan or personnel disability plan, he will have no income. The funds will be used to assist himself and Heather weather this storm and hopefully be used to make the necessary changes to there home when he is released from the hospital.
Thank you
