February 6th-12th were a whirlwind of days for our family. On February 6th Mike went in to the doctor to have blood work done. He was called back in to have a CAT scan which was completed on the 8th. Less than 2 hours after his CAT scan the doctor called Mike and told him to go to the Olathe ER. There was a mass in Mike's colon and whatever it was, it needed to be removed. That evening he was admitted into the hospital for more blood work, tests, and pain management. He was scheduled for a colonoscopy on the 10th and surgery on the 12th. Due to complications the colonoscopy was pushed back to the 11th. Following his colonoscopy we heard the words colon cancer for the first time. The doctor was sure of what he had found and the very next day Mike had surgery to remove the mass from his colon.
The surgeon removed a large section of Mike's colon, along with a part of his abdominal wall and 18 lymph nodes. Mike spent the next 6 days in the hospital healing from his surgery. During that he time we met with his oncologist Dr. Corum. He shared with us that the mass in Mike's colon was "a mean, ugly cancer" that had spread through the colon wall. The section removed from his abdominal wall was also cancerous and 8 of the 18 lymph nodes were affected by cancer. Treatment options were discussed but the focus for now is healing from surgery.
Mike went home from the hospital on February 18th and was able to get his staples removed on the 27th. On March 5th he got his port put into place. He will have a CAT scan of his lungs on the 16th. This type of colon cancer travels 3 places: stomach, liver, lungs so we need to get the scan of his chest done prior to finalizing treatment plans. On March 19th he will meet with Dr. Corum to set up his treatment plan.
