Mike Boyle's Story
Abruptly on June 17, 2017, after arriving home from work, our dear youngest brother, Mike Boyle, collapsed on his front lawn. Mike, age 45, is a a devoted husband and an amazing, loving father to his seven year-old son. Mike had excruciating pain in his mid section and tingling and numbness in his legs. He was taken by ambulance to the nearest hospital, and then transferred by helicopter to Thomas Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia, where he was diagnosed with Transverse Myelitis.
Transverse Myelitis is an inflammation of the spinal cord. It is considered an autoimmune disease, which interrupts the messages to the spinal cord nerves sent throughout the body. Mike is now paralyzed from his waist down through his feet. Along with other areas, Mike has no control over his bladder and bowel functions. Mike was transferred on July 5, 2017 to Kessler Institute of Rehabilitation (Spinal Cord Division in West Orange NJ) for intense therapy and to learn how to manage his bladder and bowels and other conditions that arise due to paralysis. Neither the doctors at Jefferson, nor at Kessler will commit to a prognosis. This condition is extremely rare and it could take months, years or never to recover. We refuse to believe in never!
Here's where you or possibly someone you know can help. To put it bluntly, Mike is in a very difficult situation, both medically and financially. He recently started a new job so he has not accrued sick time. Mike's wife was working part time for the school district, but doesn't work in the summer. Of course, they also have all of the regular bills every family acquires. We, his siblings, are doing everything we can to help them; but Mike will be coming home soon and their home needs major modifications to accommodate Mike in his wheelchair. Mike will need many months/years of therapy and with the medical bills, many being out of network or a large copay, we can't see how they can make it.
Some of you asked if we could create this page so you could help. If you would like to make a donation to help Mike with his medical bills and home modifications, we assure you that the money will be used wisely and carefully to help in these areas. Mike is really trying to remain positive and we all appreciate whatever you can do. If you cannot donate, we thank you for taking the time to read about Mike and perhaps you could share this as there may be someone elso who can help. We never thought we would be creating this page; and I know Mike never thought he would not be able to walk out of his car that night.
