Miguel Beltran medical emergency surgery

The Friday after Thanksgiving, our family decided that it was time to add a fur baby to our home.   We searched and found Miguel, a cute ball of fluff.  He was perfect for us and we instantly fell in love.

The breeder said that he was showing signs of possible illness but had taken him to the vet and everything was normal. He was a healthy puppy of 8 weeks. We took him home excited to welcome our newfamily member.

Miguel seemed like a typical puppy but was really sleepy. We noticed that he was a challenge to housetrain and he was going often. I scheduled his first visit with the vet for shots and a check up. I was thinking he had a urinary track infection and wanted toget it checked out.

The vet prescribed antibiotics and he got his shots. We came home and three days later noticed he had blood in his urine. I called to schedule a follow up appointment and continued his medication till gone. At his next appointment he was more sleepy than usual and the vet was concerned about what maybe going on. She did bloodwork and a urinalysis.

The results came back that he has a Portosystemic shunt (PSS). This is where the blood isn’t being filtered by the liver properly to remove the toxins fromthe body. His neurological function is effected as the toxins build up. We are expecting to have seizures and his eye sight to be affected.  He gets crystalsin is urine and the potential for stones.  We were told to expect that he will go at anytime.

There was one thing we might be able to do for him. He could possibly be a candidate for surgery.  In order to see if Miguel is a candidate for surgery we need to do a CT scan and if he is a candidate the surgery will extend his life to five or more years.

As we have just adopted him two weeks ago we weren’t prepared for the cost of this. As this is a rare condition for his breed this was not anything anyone would have known to expect. The symptoms are very aggressive in him and we don’t have much time to gather funds. The surgeon recommends two weeks on medications to stabilize him for surgery.

Our family would greatly appreciate any donated funds to help with the costs of getting our little Miguel better.

Thank you for your help and support in our time of need.
