Mighty Meara needs our help!
Close friends of mine have found themselves in a situation no one should be in. Little 2 year old Meara McCann was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia(AML) in late March, and is fighting it in true fighting Irish style!
Meara has 2 older sisters, Aoibhe 8 and Saoirse 4 who miss having their sister at home dearly. Her parents Johnny and Lavina are doing everything they can to help Meara through her illness as well as keep their beautiful family a float. Lavina has had to give up her job and become Meara’s full time carer, away from their other two daughters for days/weeks on end, at the same time Lavina is trying to keep up her full time studies.
Meara is classed as high risk and her treatment consist of 4 rounds of intense chemotherapy with isolation in an air compressed room in Perth Children’s Hospital for up to 6 weeks for each round of chemo. Due to COVID19 Meara’s sisters were not allowed to visit up until about 2 weeks ago when restrictions lifted.
Johnny is trying to keep the household afloat with keeping down a fulltime job. Johnny’s employers have been extremely supportive to the family. Living in Perth away from family is difficult in good times but with a sick baby we can only imagine how hard this is.
Luckily, Lavina’s sister Nicole was able to travel from Sydney to Perth to help with caring for the girls but after 4 months needs to return back to Sydney.
The family needs more urgent support to help with the girls school and home routine and also help rotate who is in Meara’s care in the hospital as someone needs to be with her at all times. Their only option is to fly Meara’s grandmother over from Ireland. After months of fighting they were finally granted a visa and an exemption to come to Perth to help with caring for the girls and support Johnny and Lavina.
With this great news came a bombshell that due to COVID19 the next flight available from Dublin to Perth is costing $10,000 AUD plus another $2,500 AUD for the accommodation for 14 days quarantine – not including food. This is a massive financial strain on top of everything for any family and we hope that by running this GoFundMe Page we can help the McCann’s, as much as we can to retrieve some of the funds they are paying to get the support they need.
