Midtown Community Safety Center Arson

Want to join me in making a difference?  My name is Crystal Windschitl, I am the Executive Director of the nonprofit Phillips West Neighborhood Organization.  I'm raising money to benefit the "Midtown Safety Center" located at 2949 Chicago Avenue South, 55407.

On May 25th, 2020 (Memorial Day) George Floyd was killed by four Minneapolis Police Officers due to the use of excessive force.  We mourn George Floyd's unnecessary death and support the attention and call for change that this tragedy incited. We support free speech and support those who exercise their right to speak and peacefully protest.  The protests in the aftermath of George Floyd's death have been a powerful catalyst for change.  We do not support rioting and any of the destruction that happened to our neighborhoods.

In the early morning hours of Saturday, May 30th the Community ran Midtown Safety Center was a victim of arson due to riots in South Minneapolis.  The Center was run by the Phillips West Neighborhood Organization.  The Center housed a civilian plain clothed Minneapolis Police Crime Prevention Specialist, a Hennepin County Probation Officer and a Spanish Speaking Domestic Abuse Advocate.  We also provided access to a Somali Speaking Advocate by appointment.

The purpose of the Center was to promote Public Safety and to be a welcoming place for people who were too afraid or intimidated to go to the 3rd Precinct Police Station.  The average income in Phillips West is approximately $20,000 per year.  60% of our residents do not have cars so the Center provided a convenient location for those who live in the area of Lake Street & Chicago Avenue.

Many people have asked us to start a GoFundMe, but we waited until we were aware of our insurance status and how our neighborhood Board felt about creating a GoFundMe.  Unfortunately we only had liability insurance so we lost everything.  The Midtown Safety Center opened in 2005 and was the longest neighborhood operated Safety Center in the City of Minneapolis history.  This is a tragic loss we are unsure if our landlord will rebuild.

With the loss of the Safety Center and the crime prevention resources it provided the Phillips West Board and Midtown Phillips West Neighbors have decided to create this GoFundMe to cover our losses and to hopefully secure a new office location somewhere in the neighborhood so we can continue assisting the neighborhood stakeholders with Public Safety & Domestic Abuse advocacy in a non intimidating friendly space.
