Micro-doc on the rights of disabled children
I'm Sarah - a filmmaker and mother to a disabled son. I am making a documentary focusing on the scandalous cost and underfunding of equipment for disabled children in the UK.
We are raising money to cover post-production costs. The documentary has mostly been shot, but we require funds to complete the edit and work that goes into post-production.
Many people believe that when a child has a disability, they are automatically given the necessary equipment to meet their needs. This couldn't be further from the truth.
Equipment can be supplied by local government, but there is often a long wait, and they are not always fit for purpose. Not all equipment is funded, and some councils have 'blanket bans' on supplying equipment - including equipment that allows children to eat and toilet in an equitable way. A basic right.
When purchasing equipment privately, families are faced with extortionate costs paying up to 10x more for equipment than they would for a typical child. In teaser video 3 I speak from personal experience about this.
Charities such as Newlife, featured in the documentary (and teaser video 2), provide a lifeline for families like mine by loaning out emergency equipment and offering grants for essential equipment such as wheelchairs and medical beds.
We shouldn't have to rely on charities for our children to access the world equitably, but the reality is we do. The costs of meeting a disabled child's basic rights are scandalous. It needs to change. Please share these teasers in your stories/retweets/reposts and help us to move this conversation forward. We want to reach as wide an audience as possible.
Teaser video 1 with William & Sabbie, coming soon.
