Mick Martin's Medical Bills

Anyone who knows Mick Martin well knows he is a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. For those of you who don’t know Mick, he and his wife Tricia are two of the nicest people you could ever meet.
They are currently facing a difficult situation and could use some help. But as is fairly typical of many a folk, asking for assistance—especially financial—can be difficult. Though there are many stressful factors that we cannot eliminate from Mick and Tricia’s life at this time, we can rally around them to help mitigate the financial burden that they face. So as an expression of our love for some very dear friends, we wanted to reach out on their behalf by setting up this GoFundMeCampaign.
Many friends are aware of the trials and tribulations that the Martin's have gone through. Mid June, Mick was experiencing shortness of breath and a cough. When he began to cough up blood, Tricia took him to the ER. He was diagnosed with pneumonia and given a broad spectrum antibiotic that didn't touch the infection. A week later he was given another antibiotic which also didn't clear the pneumonia.
Mick went back to the ER July 20 and was admitted for further testing. An enzyme was found in his blood work that indicated some heart damage. He was given yet another antibiotic and quarantined for 5 days while tested for TB. Then a new diagnosis was given: Cryptogenic Organizing Pneumonia (COP). A regimen of Prednisone was given, starting with 60 mg for 2 weeks and tapering doses over the next 2 months.
On August 3rd, Mick returned to the ER - he still couldn't breathe and was retaining fluid. Once again he was admitted and was found to have a weak left ventricle and aortic stenosis. He needed a new aortic valve, but he was a high risk patient, because of the weak pumping of the left ventricle and the lung issues that he was still dealing with. After many tests and procedures, he was determined to be a candidate for transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). He was discharged with a life vest to monitor his heart and to finish the Prednisone regimen.
One and a half weeks later, he was back to the ER complaining of panic attacks (presumably from the Prednisone), while in actuality he was having a type of heart attack. He was admitted to the Cardiac Intensive care unit and a plan to wean him off the prednisone and schedule the TAVR procedure was put in place. Finally, he was transferred to St. Mary's Hospital and the TAVR surgery was done on Sept 14. He came home Sept 19 (a full month of hospitalization this time).
A couple of weeks following his surgery, Mick had to return to the ER as his oxygen level continued to drop. Once again, he was admitted while some of his medications were tweaked and the respiratory team addressed his oxygen needs. The Pulmonary docs also put him back on 40 mg Prednisone because his lungs have not cleared enough from the COP.
Mick has a number of follow up appointments over the next few months and will be starting cardiac rehab and physical therapy, 3 times per week, starting the last week of October for a duration of 12 weeks.
We thank God for the 2nd chance that He has given Mick. Your prayers have been heard and God has given Mick the opportunity to continue to share his testimony with the many people who cross his path.
During the last 3 months, Mick and Tricia have experienced a loss in their income, many out-of- pocket expenses and will continue to have expenses over the coming months. Because Mick is a VietNam vet, the Veterans Administration is assuming a majority of the hospitalization costs.
Health care is extremely costly, as we know, and medical bills have accumulated. Tricia is not working at this time in order to be available to provide the ongoing at-home assistance that Mick needs. There is an urgent need for financial support. The funds collected here will be used to offset medical expenses, costs of travel for treatment and therapy, and to assist with the normal monthly obligations associated with maintaining a home. Please consider helping Mick and Tricia financially if the Lord lays it upon your heart. Your continued prayers are appreciated during this time of recovery and rehabilitation.
