Michigan Black Therapy Fund

Donation protected
There have been a number of global wellness funds to support the mental health needs of the community during these challenging times. I have wondered in what way can I continue to help build my community. Through a friend, Ashley McGirt, I was compelled to follow in her footsteps and start a wellness fund for the Black community across the state of Michigan.

I would like to raise money for at least 100 Black women and men, in the state of Michigan, to have access to free mental health services.⁣  Michigan is the home of my practice Transformative Mind Counseling which is why I am choosing to focus on this area. I want individuals, couples, and families to have access to these funds directly, without being waitlisted on a nationwide list.⁣

These funds will cover (4-6 sessions) during this critical time of intense racial trauma. I am also looking to gather at least 40 black culturally responsive therapists that could take on 2 -3 clients. ⁣ ⁣

While there isn't a lack of Black Therapist in the Metro Detroit area, that is not the same across the state, and access to the therapist can be a challenge. I am hoping I can get those of you who are in private practice to sign up and share and also join Metro Detroit Black Therapist Alliance Group on Facebook (if you're not in it already). Through the fund, the therapists will be paid for providing culturally responsive treatment to clients.

I am proposing that white allies and other allies DONATE MONEY to pay for Therapy for Black women and men to receive therapy. Other groups are able to donate as well. These funds will grant therapeutic services to those who are in need of mental health services during this critical time.

Therapy is expensive and insurance plans often offer low reimbursement rates for clinicians compiled with student loan debt and business costs. Capitalism and other oppressive systems can have profound impacts on our ability to cope and maintain healthy work/life balance, thus can even create and reinforce negative self-talk and messaging. This can contribute to depression, anxiety, and suicidality. Let’s alleviate this financial burden for our Black clients.⁣

#MIBlackTherapyFund will alleviate the burden of cost and burden of discount to both black clients and black therapists. I have made 2 forms: one for therapists who'd like to take on black clients; and one for the client. Once we have enough funds I will start accepting clients to sign up. Forms for the therapists to be an accepting provider can be found on www.Transformativemindcounseling.com/MiBlackTherapyFund.

On average 1 client having 4 sessions would cost $500 based on standard therapy rates. This would fund 100 women and men with free therapy and use more money for 100 more to receive subsidized cost therapy.

If you'd like to donate and sponsor someone please send whatever you can, it all adds up!
