Michael needs a fighting chance

It takes a village to keep our children healthy, strong, and safe.

I started this fundraiser for my newborn nephew Michael who was born with Down Syndrome. A few months ago my brother became a dad at the ripe young age of 50. He is married to a wonderful woman, who is my sister in every sense of the word, and they have created a beautiful family together.

Unfortunately the economy has hit them hard like many other families in this country, and Michael's ongoing medical needs create tremendous hardship for the family.

This beautiful little baby boy deserves the best start in life as possible. From the beginning it has been tough going and Michael's birth was scary. Right after he was born he would not cry, and he was so tiny and vulnerable. They whisked him away from his mother and flew him to a specialty hospital to confirm the Doctors suspicions that he had Down Syndrome. Everyone immediately had to focus on observing Michael's heart, lungs, and digestion and he stayed in the hospital for many days. Just recently he had what Dr's thought was pneumonia that was actually a collapsed lung and he stayed at the hospital for a week hooked up to tubes.

There are many medical disorders associated with Down Syndrome and in the first few days we began to realize what a challenge to keep Lil Mikey healthy it is going to be. While researching I have learned that because there is no cure, the goals of Down Syndrome treatment are to control symptoms and manage any resulting medical conditions. This includes regular checkups and screenings, medications, and surgery. Counseling and support groups are also aspects of treatment for helping cope with the emotional and practical aspects of Down syndrome.

The money we are raising will help in the immediate medical care of MIchael and the loss of wages when staying/caring fot him in the hospital.  Michael needs help growing into the healthiest and happiest child he can be.

I cant stress enough that it really does "Take a village to help raise our children". I have recently seen what an amazing community can do to help one child attain a better way of life, It was so inspirational and awe striking to be a part of.

A healthier, stronger, and happier way of life is what we all hope for our children. So please contribute today and help give Michael the best start in life as possible!
