Michael Gold, a full-of-life 44 year old, lives with his wife, Angel, and their two young sons in Arvada, Colorado. He spends almost every day coaching his sons in baseball, football and soccer from the field or the stands. When his belly started churning more than usual, he figured it was the result of a full-time job and a full-time family.
Two weeks ago, he went in for a CT scan and was sent to the hospital for an emergency appendectomy. He came out of the surgery with a Signet Ring Cell Carcinoma Cancer of the Appendix and Colon Cancer Stage 4 diagnosis and a 12-inch-long incision that will need to heal before his body can bear what comes next.
Oncologists are working on molecular and DNA testing to come up with a cocktail mix to battle this very aggressive and rare cancer. Michael is very young and very healthy and very focused on sticking around to raise his sons. Treatment needs to begin as soon as his body can handle the assault to give him that chance.
Because the cancer cells have broken beyond the initial tumor on Michael’s appendix and spread into his abdomen, chemo is the first and, in some cases, the only recommended treatment. We’re praying that Michael will qualify for a procedure called Hot Chemo, where a surgeon literally pours a hot chemo bath directly into his abdominal cavity. This treatment has helped other people with malignant signet ring cell carcinoma live beyond the short term.
This aggressive treatment will leave Michael unable to work, recovering in the hospital and then at home for 6 to 7 months. Since we’re in the initial stages of running to catch up, we’re estimating costs at $50,000 and will be diligently updating this information as more gets confirmed. There is a very strong likelihood that he will need to travel to another state for treatment, which will increase costs as well.
All we know right now is that we need to move fast.
The funds will help cover costs that aren’t covered by insurance, which could be up to $100,000 for the Hot Chemo. Additionally, these donations will help with living expenses that go beyond what Angel’s salary will cover.
Michael and Angel have a strong support community that intensely loves them. At this point we are all focused on getting treatment in the works.

Our sincerest apologies for being off the radar for so long regarding Michael’s health. Our lives have been consumed with balancing the demands of life with the goal of staying a breath ahead of Michael’s cancer. He’s gone through a lot of chemo, clinical trials, surgeries, procedures and hospital stays. And there are still more coming up.
You all have been such a vital part of getting us to this point, and we’re eternally grateful for your love, your prayers and your financial contributions. Right now we’re struggling to cover medical expenses but our hope and determination are as strong as ever.
Sebastian and Trevor are getting ready to go back to school now. They continue to be the powerful force of love they always have been. Angel’s fortitude and ability to keep a most out-of-balance time in balance are phenomenal. Michael’s love of family, friends and life is as potent as it always has been, and his will is strong. Right now he’s laying low due to a high level of pain caused by the multitude of tumors that are in his body.
This 21-month long battle has taken a toll on everyone – but as a family, the Gold’s are in it to win it…together.
