Michael's Paralysis

Donation protected

On March 31st of 2018, my father, Michael Frueh, suffered an ischemic spinal stroke that has left him terminally paralyzed from the waist down. These strokes are extremely rare and occur when there is a disruption in the blood supply to the spinal cord due to a blood clot. Such is the case with my Dad.

Michael is currently in the rehabilitation unit at Parkland Hospital in Dallas, TX, where he is putting forth all of the energy he can muster into intensive physical and occupational therapy. The therapy has truly been a test to his mental and physical capabilities. Despite the situation, he has managed to hold on to his sense of humor, cracking "dad jokes" every chance he gets. We are in awe and admiration of his seemingly good spirits; he is a man of unfathomable strength.

For as long as my sister and I have been alive, my dad has worked tenaciously to support our family. Being the sole wage-earner of our family was no easy task, and money was, and still is, very tight. My mom, sister, and I have been by my father's side for emotional support, but the reality of the extent of medical expenses is setting in. We need help.

Applications for Medicaid and Social Security Disability insurance have already been submitted, however, it can take many months for any benefits to become active. In the meantime, this has left our family with building expenses that we are incapable of paying. Our only option at this point is to seek the goodwill in others, in hopes that we can support my dad in his long journey of rehabilitation.

My father will remain in the rehabilitation unit at Parkland for a week or two more, at which time doctors have recommended he be moved to a nursing facility where he will continue therapy. Although he will never walk again, doctors are optimistic that he may be able to reach a level of near independence, assuming that we are able to afford the therapy he requires.

It is difficult for us to have to reach out like this for financial support, however, the circumstances have left us with no other option. Any support you can offer is deeply appreciated. Every dollar donated will fill our hearts with immense gratitude. Please keep my dad and our family in your thoughts and prayers as we face the challenges of the road ahead. Thank you, from all of us.
