Michael Rex DeLand Memorial

Michael Rex DeLand passed away unexpectedly on January 3rd, 2021. He was 67 years old. He was born March 18th, 1953 in Flint Michigan. Mike enjoyed growing up in Michigan, playing many sports in school and spending time with his family at their Cottage on Higgins Lake. After graduating from Vassar High School Mike attended Northern Michigan University. On a rebellious whim in 1974, he and a friend headed west to see Evel Knievel jump the Snake River. On their way back from Idaho, they stopped to fish with a college friend in Jackson Hole and the Tetons were the first to steal his heart.

Mike went on to be a long term resident of Jackson. On May 30th, 1987 he married the love of his life, Louise Huemoeller, in Star Valley, WY. In 1991, with the expertise of his good friend, he and his father built the home in Jackson where he would raise his two children, Alex and Anna. His love of fishing brought him to the ocean, and he and Louise have enjoyed the last 13 offseasons at their home in Osprey, FL. Mike loved splitting his time between the beach and the mountains.

All who knew and loved Mike admired his adventurous spirit, which took him all around the world for both work and pleasure. For over 40 years he found adventure in his career in the oil industry. Mike had many passions. Some of his favorites were fishing, hunting, skiing, hockey, motorcycles, boating, and travel but he was most passionate about spending time with his family and friends. Mike's friends say he always took the time to make everyone feel welcome with his warm personality and zest for life. He was always the life of the party with his crazy tales of his times working abroad. Even though Mike worked on the other side of the world, he still made his family his top priority, making sure to take special time for his kids when he returned from work. He has passed his adventurous spirit on to his kids and instilled in them his love of travel and the outdoors, teaching his whole family, including Louise, how to ski. Mike's adventurous spirit and love for life will live on forever through all those who loved him.

Mike is survived by his loving wife, Louise; son Alex Michael DeLand; daughter Anna Marie DeLand; sister Janice Kay Guran (William); brother Robert Terry DeLand (Patricia); and brother-in-law Robert A. Swackhamer. Also surviving him are 10 nieces and nephews, 15 great-nieces and great-nephews, and a grand-dog Buck. Michael was preceded in death by his parents Robert George and Shirley Della DeLand; and sister Linda D. Swackhamer.

Contributions to the family goFundMe will go partially to a donation to the JH Fire/EMS and Teton Search and Rescue and partially towards a memorial to be established at the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. Mike spent many years enjoying the resort with his friends and family.  It holds a very special place in his and our hearts.
