Michael John Eaton, a local to Cairns who grew up in Holloway's Beach was very well known to many people in and around the Cairns district. He was a son, a brother, a cousin, a friend, a father of 5,a grandfather and Uncle Mick to many. Michael was married for 15 years to a local Cairns woman, their marriage ended many years ago, however they still remained amicable as he kept a strong bond with his kids.

Michael was a funny, cheeky, loving and fiercely loyal man to all who knew him. With such a calming nature if he was anymore laid-back he would fall off his chair. There was nothing he wouldn’t do for the people he held close to his heart. He lived a wild and fulfilled lifestyle, living with gusto for a majority of his life. Mick’s heart was all for his kids, his animals, his tattoos, fishing, anything with an engine and his Harley. Living such a full life, it finally caught up with him, Mick suffered from a sever stroke a few years ago which left him paralyzed on the right side of his body. Doctors told him he may only ever use the right side of his body to half the potential, if that, again. With his determination, support from family and close friends, he regained 90% movement of his body getting himself back to walking and talking. While going through recovery Mick never lost hope or sight of the end goal, which was to get back up riding his bikes again and enjoying life.

Even with a solid recovery, life after Mick’s stroke was not the same, he lived a much simpler life but never the less remained true to his humorous and and mischievous self. Everyday Mick was out to better himself, taking each day as it came, being better than yesterday and getting back on his bike, which after a long hard earned recovery – he did!

Being unable to work left Mick with a lot of spare time, he developed a routine of walking to Cairns Central almost daily for exercise further assisting with his recovery. After many trips, he found comfort at Cairns Central being around society, making friends and interacting with new people. He would welcome conversation with anyone and everyone in the community, from all walks of life.

Wednesday September 22nd, Mick was on his daily walk and arrived at Cairns Central at 8am. He was approached by a 35 year old man unknown to him, who evidently was distressed and began ranting at Mick. As his true calm, collected and laid-back self, he chose not to engage, instead he removed himself from this confrontation and walked away. Unbeknown to him, he was then cowardly attacked from behind with no warning and slashed across the throat. This brutal attack was malicious, unmerited and fatal. 20 minutes later Michael lost his life, leaving behind his 5 beautiful kids, his granddaughter, family and his friends.

Mick was only 51 with so much life left to live and passion to share. He will always be remembered fondly by so many and be held so highly in our hearts. The memory of his cheeky persona, his crooked laugh and dry sense of humor will live on with us forever. You were taken from our lives but you cannot ever be taken from our hearts. You will never be forgotten Uncle Mick.

At the request of many who have crossed paths with Mick throughout his life, we have enabled a Go Fund Me page for anyone wishing to pay tributes and helping his kids and family in this unpredicted and unsettling time.

We would like to thank the community for all the support we have received, it means more than you could imagine.
