Michael “Gas” Gasparato was diagnosed with testicular cancer in January of 2018 at the age of 36. The tumor was removed in January and his 6 week follow-up appointment in March showed that there were no longer any signs of cancer in his body. Mike was already in tremendous shape and he was able to crank up his workouts even more after that follow-up. He was pushing a blocking sled during one of his workouts and he thought he aggravated an old back injury. In late June he woke up with excruciating back pain. X-Rays showed extreme subluxation in his lower back. He started having shortness of breath, so on Monday, August 6, 2018, Mike allowed his mom to bring him to Lexington Medical Center ER in Columbia, SC. Tumors and blood clots were found throughout his lungs. His liver, back and a rib also have tumors. LMC rarely sees cancer spread so aggressively in such a short period of time. Mike is in the fight of his life being told he had maybe 6 weeks to live without treatment.
Other than this Stage 3C Cancer, Mike is in tremendous physical shape. He has only eaten the cleanest of foods, vitamins and supplements while drinking only clean water and teas for the last couple of years. He feared that he might have to face the same fight that his father had with cancer. Mike focused his energy on helping others, teaching and learning. He was a standout football player as a receiver and running back at Dutch Fork in high school and continued his playing career as a running back at Penn State University in college. He was a GA under Steve Spurrier at South Carolina. He later was a teacher and coach for Chapin High School. Mike’s younger brother, Greg, played football at State College High School and continued his career playing safety at Wofford College. After college Greg coached at Richland Northeast High School, Juniata College, Brevard College and Wofford College. Greg is currently coaching at Appalachian State University. Mike’s late father, Dominick “Nick” Gasparato also was a devoted teacher and coach for 31 years at: Sacred Heart School, University of Pittsburgh, Michigan State University, University of Virginia, University of South Carolina, Temple University and Penn State University where he coached on the 1986 National Championship team. He also was a teacher and coach at multiple high schools along the way including Central Bucks West in Pennsylvania, Dutch Fork in South Carolina, State College in Pennsylvania, and Cape Coral in Florida. His unbelievably strong and beautiful mother, Jean, still works for the University of South Carolina.
This family is filled with the hearts of teachers. They want to help people be the best they can be. The Gasparatos need our help.
