My dad has been a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather for all my life, and now at his 65th birthday, it’s his turn for a gift. He has always been a hard worker, and he will continue to do so but things are going to look a bit different now, and it’s my turn to help.

On May 3rd 2020 I received a message from my sister saying that dad had been rushed to the hospital via ambulance and was unconscious. His Sunday morning started out like many others, got outta bed, got dressed, got a cup of coffee, and started working on the yard. Then around mid morning he just fell. My mom rushed to his side and my grandma called 911. EMT's transported my dad to our local hospital to get his airway intubated and then put him on a helicopter to Riverside community hospital stroke center 30 miles away. Scans showed my dad had suffered a massive hemorrhagic stroke caused by a ruptured aneurysm. There, the stroke intervention team worked swiftly and skillfully to save my dad's life by performing multiple coordinated neurosurgeries to relieve the pressure and coil the aneurysm to stop the bleeding. He has been stable in the Intensive Care Unit ever since. Now we are on the long road of figuring out what this means for the rest of his life. I have not been able to see him myself as the Covid restrictions limit visitation. What I CAN do, is prepare for the joy of bringing him home.

There are many unknowns in this condition, but what they have seen is that his mobility was severely compromised to the point of partial paralyzation, as well as his ability to speak. This man who has provided for his family for 37 years will now be unable to continue that work. This man who survived childhood Polio and made it to his 65th birthday will now need some help.

The Doctors are giving us hope that he will be able to leave the hospital in roughly 3-4 weeks. There is much to do in this time, but here are the things we know are at the top of the list:

He will need
-A wheelchair to help him regain his mobility and his sense of independence
-A reliable vehicle suitable for wheelchair transport for my senior mother to get him to rehab appointments.
- They will need minor modifications to their existing home to make it accessible
-And of course, they will need help covering the astronomical unexpected medical expenses. Which include but are not limited to- prescription drug copay, Dr visit copay, physical therapy devices and safety devices.

I am asking for help supporting this man who has supported me all my life. So many people are struggling during this time, but I know how good it feels to be able to help someone else. It may seem like a drop in the bucket, but every drop helps reach the top. Right now, we need each one. Please consider sharing his story, and giving him a gift today for his birthday.
