Mich & Mo's Skydive for Kids Cancer

One of the most daunting sentences that a person can hear is, “You have cancer.” Three simple words with an exhaustible weight. Two weeks ago, those three words were spoken to me by my doctor after what was considered to be a routine appendectomy. At 23, I envisioned my life to be going out and having an amazing time with my friends, going to music festivals, working in the music industry in New York City, and looking forward to an upcoming Euro/UK trip with my best friend Monique. I felt so on top of the world! The last thing I pictured for myself was countless hospital visits and testing.
As scared as I sometimes feel and as overwhelming as all of this is, I know in the end that I’m going to be okay. We caught it early - and with surgery and chemotherapy my prognosis is good. I am going to beat this. I have an excellent support system and am surrounded by people who I am forever grateful for in helping me along this journey.
One of those people is my best friend Mo. Even though she is currently living in London, she is always taking my calls no matter what time or where she is and immediately after she found out my diagnosis we discussed how important it was that we do this Euro/UK trip right and enjoy everything that there is to offer in this life.
So, we decided that we would, because life’s too short to wait. We’re going to walk the Champs Elysees in Paris, hike the Swiss Alps in Switzerland, explore the streets and pubs of London, rock out at the Haven Festival in Copenhagen, and finally: go skydive near the cliffs of Wales.
We have also decided how important it is that we spread some joy and love in light of this diagnosis and do something for others. So, we’ve turned our skydive into a fundraiser for an amazing charity in the UK called “CLIC Sargent: Young Lives vs. Cancer.” They do incredible work supporting children and young people with cancer and their families by awarding grants, offering counseling, coordinating treatment and care, offering local housing, etc. They fight tirelessly in order to minimize the damage and pain that cancer inflicts not only the patient, but on their family as well.
Many people have come up to me and offered their condolences and help and I’m so appreciative and grateful. I’m going to be okay, though. I’m going to come out on the other end of this. Many other people my age and younger are not as lucky as I am once they hear those three words, and Monique and I want to help them. So, we’re going to jump out of a plane at 15,000 feet to raise money for them! Our goal is to raise $1,000 so that this organization can keep doing their incredible work and fight the good fight. $1,000 means a child can receive chemo that his parents may not be able to afford. It means a family has a place to stay when they bring their daughter to the hospital for treatment when they live 50 miles away. It means that one day, these children and young people will hear three amazing words: “You’re cancer free.”
