THEATRE AT MIA
Whether within the classroom spotlighting our Theatre, Musical Theatre, or Production Design &  Marketing courses, after school with our extracurricular Winter Musical, or at the District and State Thespian Festival competitions, theatre is alive and well at Marco Island Academy!

Three years ago, after Hurricane Irma directly hit Marco Island, we lost our performance venue. Ultimately, we decided that the show had to go on and we produced Willy Wonka Jr. outdoors on our pavilion. The rest is history, and the tradition of producing high quality entertainment for the Marco Island community began.

In 2019, we raised the bar with our production of Aladdin Jr., which featured over 25 cast and crew members from Marco Island Academy, Marco Island Charter Middle, and Tommie Barfield Elementary schools. In a grassroots-like production, the show was staged in-the-round (360 degree) with sets, props, and costumes designed and created by students.

Last year, in 2020, we raised the bar even higher by producing our first-ever full-length production of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s masterpiece musical, Into the Woods. This production featured an immersive and unique in-the-round experience using found objects and costumes to tell this magical, fractured fairytale story.

MIA's Troupe 8628 has competed on the District and State levels over the past three years, earning high honors for the individual performance and technical events. In 2019, 18 members competed in 27 events, with 6 events (8 members) advancing to the March 2020 FL State Thespian Festival in Tampa!

BY THE NUMBERS
The Performing Arts program at MIA operates on a budget of $10,000-15,000 each year. This covers classroom supplies and equipment for our Film and Production Design and Marketing classes, our Winter/Spring Musical, and our participation in the International Thespian Society, the theatre honor society.

20% of our operating budget comes from ticket sales with our Winter/Spring Musical.
33% comes from Student Classroom Activity Fees and student contributions to the Thespian Festival Registration Fees.
The remaining 47% comes from contributions directly to the Performing Arts/Theatre program.
