Mia My Miracle

Mia was born with a midline cleft lip and palate. She has a rare neurological condition called Lobar Holoprosencephaly, causing severe global development delay.

Mia lives in Carlisle, Western Australia, with her mum Margaret, and two older brothers.

On Sunday 16th July, Margaret woke to find her car had been broken into overnight and trashed.  Most devastating though, was that Mia's specialised adaptive stroller was taken.   Not only is this stroller Mia's 'wheels', but it is her only way of getting out into the community.  Mia has many therapy and medical appointments to attend, as well as school, and is reliant on her adaptive stroller.   

These strollers are very expensive and can cost approximately $10,000.    It is also customised for Mia's specific needs.  Margaret is investigating to find out if either her car insurance or the funding body who provided the stroller will cover the cost of replacing it.   This is a lengthy process, and IF it can be replaced, a new chair can take approximately 2-6 months to arrive.  In the meantime, Mia needs a hire chair.  

It is a really grey area as to who is responsible for replacing special needs equipment.  If it can't be replaced by her car insurance or the funding body, then Margaret will be forced to fund the chair herself.

As a single mother, this is a MAJOR cost to Margaret's family.  On a side note, Margaret was about to launch into some fundraising for Mia soon, to help cover costs associated with therapies, equipment and medical expenses.   This has now just put a major spanner in the works, and added a lot of pressure onto an already full plate.
