Thank you all for viewing my fundraising page. As many of you may know, service has always been something I've been passionate about. Ever since I can remember, I've dreamt of a life of documenting my travels of volunteer, activist and humanitarian work. The idea of going to a foreign country and being able to provide aid to their differing needs and documenting my experiences so others may gain knowledge of a culture they may not be able to experience themselves excites and empowers me. I've always had this as a dream but now I'm wanting to make it a reality with your help.
One of my main passions lie in spreading awareness of domestic violence and empowerment of women and children. Jamaica has an alarming rate of domestic violence. To make matters worse, most women and children are immune to the abuse within the community and don't even know their basic human rights. This causes most cases to go unreported and unresolved. According to the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) 1 in 3 women experience at least one form of domestic violence in her lifetime. Yet, only 8% of these cases are ever reported and that is usually due to death. Jamaica is trying to make strides towards protection of women and children but even Freedom House states that "legal protection for women and children are poorly enforced" (2013).
Due to these alarming facts, I feel extremely passionate about serving the families of Jamaica by providing them with counseling, education and even representation in the courts through the independent Projects Abroad organization.
I will be documenting my experience through photography and film so I can share my experience with people at home and bring awareness to this growing problem.
The money donated will go towards transportation, living arrangments, accommodations and food. I will be living with a host family in the town of Montego Bay so I will be living and working with the people around me. This will create a huge bond between me and the community, which I couldn't be more excited about.
I feel truly blessed that God is providing me with an amazing opportunity to serve the woman and children of Jamaica. I know that with the support of my strong faith, family and all you that I can really make a difference in a community that is needing it.
