Menngen Station needs a new School of the Air

Donation protected
The community of Menngen Station is raising money to construct a new building for a new ‘School of the Air’.

This once thriving community who embraces the Wardaman culture, fill will cattle, families and once upon a time, in 2002 an established building for School of the Air. But in 2014, because of heavy winds and storms, the roof of the building blew off. Due to the lack of funding, the roof could not be repaired. As the school is privately funded, not government funded, the building was knocked down and removed from the station.

The photo above shows where the old “School of the Air” was

Yidumduma Bill Harney, is the last fully initiated elder of the Wardaman country. Yidumduma Bill Harney, was born, raised and educated in Wardaman country. Yidumduma Bill Harney is 91 years old and over the years he has documented language and sharing cultural experiences to many people in the community. Yidumduma Bill Harney explains that’s it's time to rebuild the community with the next generation of children to be educated and soaked in the wisdom that Yidumduma Bill Harney has to offer.

The community was hit by tragedy time and time again. Bill never gave up. The stresses of lack of housing, very little money to live on and also having limited access for the families' children to education. Bill saw an opportunity to rebuild the school and bring the families back to Menngen Station. The children that went to school in 2002 would like to bring their children back to have the education they deserve.

Yidumduma Bill Harney knows that the land is of great respect to Indigenous Peoples. To not know your country causes a painful disconnection, and Yidumduma Bill Harney only knows to well the impact it will have on the younger generation and so on, if not taught in schools and in general. For me connection to country is important, it is a continuous learning process. It’s a lifelong journey that Bill would like to pass on to our future generations. He will maintain their connections with lands and waters, through storytelling, ceremony and spirituality.
All the children will be provided with normal material from the Northern Territory Department of Education.
I will also have relevant histories and cultures cross-curriculum relevant to the main lesson attached. This has been affective method when the school was originally established in 2002.

So, when you do not have much, you rely on the kindness of people. We are asking for donations to, so we start our School of the Air immediately.

OUR DOLLAR GOAL IS $150 000 - this not a cheap project but please donate and make sure you share this page to your friends.

What the funding will be used for:
  • Renovate shed infrastructure for a school.
  • Provide a kitchen space to plan for healthy eaters.
  • Set up a reading area and new books.
  • Organise transport to and from the school and camps.
  • Get WIFI facilities to support learning and teaching online.
  • Stationery and books.
  • New computers.
  • Furniture.
  • Aim to provide another building as I know more families with their children are coming.

Every dollar donated will go directly in starting to build the school quicker. If you cant spare any dollars, then maybe you can volunteer your time in helping. If you’re a master builder, plumber or just volunteering your time to make it happen.

“If we build it, they will come”

Kind Regards,
