METRO Seniors to San Juan

Help the METRO Seniors of 2018 succeed in their IB Biology Class with a research trip to San Juan Island in Washington state. This trip will take place from March 4th - 11th so the funds are needed by February 1st so we know how many students can go.
One of the IB requirements is to investigate a mesocosm, (meso- or 'medium' and -cosm 'world') any outdoor experimental system that examines the natural environment under controlled conditions).
After much research by instructor, Ms. Selimovic, Friday Harbor Laboratories turned out to be the perfect fit. Not only would the class be able to do what's required for IB, but students could get first hand exposure to the marine biology field from real professionals, possibly gaining interest in marine biology or other research careers.
Ms. Selimovic spent countless hours poring over details to come up with the best experience for the class and still keep the costs reasonable. This cost came out to be roughly $1000 per student. This includes airfare, transportation, and lodging for the 5 day trip for 20 students and 2 chaperones (they are paying as well). This cost also covers 2 hours on the research vessel Centennial (pictured below).
METRO Academic and Classical High School is the top rated school in Missouri. As a prestigious public high school, the students come from very socio-economically diverse backgrounds. Even with the trip costs kept as low as possible, some families may be unable to send their kids.
Our highest priority is to help all 20 students afford this unique opportunity. Any additional funds beyond the $10,000 goal will be used to supplement their experience with additional time on the Centennial performing field experiments. We hope the class will even have time for a little sight-seeing and souvenier shopping.
Your donations ensure the whole class is able to go on this once-in-a-lifetime trip together and experience all they can get from their METRO and IB education.

All donors will receive a link to download selected photos of the class trip after they return. Select donors over $250 will receive daily blogs from the class during their research trip. Premier donors over $500 will receive the blog and a special souvenir from the research trip.
