Hello! My name is Sawyer, and welcome to the page for the Metal Mayhem Underground Radio Music Support Project. Thank you for visiting. Metal Mayhem Underground is an online radio station dedicated to our love and support for heavy metal music.
For years, I have been very passionate about two things: Music- particularly heavy metal, and radio. Like many others in this current time, I was always very lost with what I wanted to do as a career- something that would actually make some money. I thought I could become a musician, and then later a radio host. Unfortunately, too many starve before they make anything of either of those careers. So I moved on, and found a career path that can make enough money to sustain myself. But my passion still lies in both areas- music, and radio. When I was a kid, I started listening to a morning radio show called Bob & The Showgram here in Raleigh, North Carolina, and I listened every single day for over ten years. It became a dream of mine to be on their show. Finally, I got the opportunity. I majored in radio broadcasting at Western Carolina University, and I needed an internship. I called up the Showgram, and simply asked to be an intern. After an interview process, explaining my passion for their show, I was accepted on with them. That was very much a dream come true for me. I became a leading intern with them, a stress-ridden phone screener on the biggest radio show in the capital, and this fueled my love for radio more than ever before.
During this time, I had started a college radio show called Metal Mayhem on WWCU, focused on heavy metal music. I have always loved this music, and I cannot recall a time in my life where I have existed without it. Heavy metal has always been a very special type of music. There are many aspects that can be talked about with it, but there is one that has always been severely overlooked- Community. If you have a Slayer shirt on, and see someone from across the room with a Motorhead shirt on, there is immediately a sense of connection. That does not seem to exist- at least not as easily and strongly- in any other form of music. My good friend, my brother, and co-host Benjie I met through this sense of community, through him calling a radio station and with good faith, trusted that we would get along and be friends through this music; that is how he became involved with my radio show. Heavy metal music also awakens a rare dedication. For many reasons, it is held dear by countless people. I am one of these people. Through metal magazines, books, documentaries, numerous hours on the incredible Encyclopaedia Metallum site, and the pages and pages of band names that Benjie used to give me to go and check out- I have entirely dedicated my life to this type of music, and as I evolve it has become as increasingly important to share it as it has been to discover and become solely enriched by it.
That is why today, I am asking you for help. There are so many incredible bands and musicians out there, and through my love of radio, I would like to support them as much as possible, and share with you everything that they have given me. I am asking for, over time of course, $30,000. This will be a significant head start in obtaining all the music that I have fallen in love with upon listening to online, ensuring that these bands get paid for their art, and also importantly, that I can share with you my passion and knowledge for this music- for incredible bands that may or may not be heard otherwise. Yes, I indeed have a large Iron Maiden collection to complete, rare stuff that I would love to play on my radio station. But also a LOT of music that has been buried and forgotten, gems that absolutely must be known to everyone. This is important. Every single cent I receive from this donation will be spent on music. It will be sent to artists for their great work, so I may share and experience it with you on my radio station.
Those of us who love heavy metal music as much as I do, or radio as it used to be, or music as a crucial and awe-inspiring art form- we are a community. And if you do not love metal like we do... please allow me to welcome you to our family. Let me share with you our passion.
Please help with any amount you can. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you.
