Mercy at the Border

Please meet my friend, Sr. Anne Connolly, RSM. We met years ago, when we attended Gwynedd Mercy University. Today, Sister Anne is volunteering at a short term respite center in Texas. She not only speaks Spanish, but she is also fluent in compassion.
Sr. Anne works each day accompanying up to 300 asylum seekers, as they find their way to a legal and safe home in the USA. She tells this story about a woman she encountered at the center.
Many of the women and men who pass thru the center daily are not smiling without some kind of a nudge. This woman was a sure exception. I met her in a line somewhere. Was it for food? Clothing? A shower? My eye was caught by 2 things: a beautiful and real smile on her face and in her eyes. And her pregnant belly. When we made eye contact, after a pause, she held out a small coin. “No we are not charging for anything.” I said. Still she reached for my hand, put the coin firmly in my palm, -- and spoke. "This doesn't exist in Guatemala anymore, but...” (And then she closed my hand around the little coin)... “With it I want to say thank you for everything. For all the comfort and love we feel here."
It was a precious moment, with a huge embrace attached.
Now that’s what I’m talking about! Sr. Anne has been asked to be at the border to serve the needy. She’s agreed, and serving on behalf of all of us, who believe in second chances and new beginnings, just like my Irish ancestors.
