Dear Kind Soul,
Mental Illness can affect anyone and the first thing people lose when affected by it is their home. 30-35% of those experiencing homelessness, and up to 75% of women experiencing homelessness, have mental illnesses. It is of critical importance to provide support, care and accommodation at the right time to help people at the worst times of their lives.
Respite care is a short-term boarding, support and care provided to people who are either transitioning from Hospital Care into a long-term accommodation or from their home or long-term accommodation into the hospital or when their carers need a much-deserved break and change of scenery. These are the times when there is a high chance of people becoming homeless or being lost to follow-up.
Your funds will be used to procure and set up a 5 bedded Mental Health respite with 24/7 care and support. Counselling services and support to transition to independent living. Profits from this will be used to set up further units all across Australia, Research various sustainable therapies in preventive health care, Produce standardised course materials to amalgamate indigenous concepts to mainstream mental health, Use people's lived experiences to establish peer support, set up processes of cultural inputs by using the concept of for the people by the people.
I am here asking to support the My Mental Health Project because it is a preventive mental health initiative. This social enterprise is not a very lucrative business unlike the curing disease model and there is no funding or grants available for this and most resources are taken up by the big charities by use of virulent lobbying.
