Men for Others

Dear Canisius High School family and friends:

I am hopeful that, as CHS alumni and friends, we could come together to help support a mother and her future Crusader (class of 2017). Maria is a 43 year old, single mother to Conor. She was a teacher in a Catholic grammar school, until she recently faced some health challenges. I got to know Maria pretty well, as she taught all three of my children. My oldest son and her son have been grammar school classmates since Pre-k, and they will be attending Canisius High School together in the fall. Maria is an angel on earth. She has always been willing to chip in and volunteer to help anyone and any function in need. Not only was she a teacher, but she also used to run the after-school program and summer program for kids. The kids, parents, faculty and staff just adore her. To know her is to love her. She is a special person who always makes a difference in the lives of people that she encounters. Her smile and her laugh are contagious. Now Maria needs our help.

Maria was recently experiencing some health issues similar to those that many of us experience, but the symptoms masked a more serious problem. The wind up is that she had an undetected blood clot, which ultimately led to her experiencing a stroke on May 4th. To complicate things even more, after her stroke she had to undergo emergency heart surgery to repair a ruptured aortic valve.

She is recovering, but she is unable to earn an income at this point. It is unclear if she'll be able to work again. Before these health issues arose, life as a single mother was hard enough on a Catholic school teacher salary. Now, with mounting medical bills, limited income, and an uncertain future the stress is unbearable.

The love of Maria's life is her son, Conor. He is the center of her world! Her dream was for him to be able to enjoy 4 years at Canisius High School. Conor is a great kid who shared that same dream. In light of all the recent struggles, it was becoming apparent that she may not be able to send Conor to Canisius High School. I assured her that some way somehow we could make it happen. Through the Grace of God, we've found an alumnus who was looking to sponsor such a young man. In an amazing display of generosity and selflessness, this alumnus has agreed to pay the tuition for Conor for his four years at Canisius High School! Could there be any better example that Canisius High School is the greatest place on earth.

We all know that the expense of attending Canisius High School will go far beyond the tuition. There will be bookstore needs. There will be extracurricular needs. There will be costs involved with playing sports (Conor is a hockey player). No thirteen year old boy should have to bear the brunt of these burdens. He should be able to be a kid and enjoy his high school experience.

I'm asking you to be a Man for Others and show Maria and Conor how great Canisius High School has been to you and your family by making a donation today. This will truly change the paths of two lives.

Thank you all for your donation!
