Miles S. Kimmel, of Lincoln, NE, passed away after a lengthy battle with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) on the morning of September 27th, at the age of 74. Miles is survived by his wife of 50 years, Kathy, and their son John. He is also survived by his siblings – Carole (and Don) Pitts, Charlie (and Jeanette) Noel, and brothers-in-law John R Tutty, Dan Tutty, and Doug (and Jan) Tutty, along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Miles’ battle with CLL began about 15 years ago, which included several chemotherapy treatments. His COPD was diagnosed about 10 years ago, which required oxygen treatment. Combined with being diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes, that resulted in severe peripheral neuropathy, restricted Miles’ mobility and over-all quality of life for most of the last 15 years. His long-term conditions made it difficult to acquire and maintain life insurance.
Prior to Miles’ illnesses, he loved sports and lettered in basketball, baseball, track and football while in high school. Upon graduation, he attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, on scholarship for football. After college and serving in the US Navy during Vietnam, he returned to Lincoln where he started his family and furthered pursued an active lifestyle as a local referee and umpire for softball, baseball, football, and basketball. He loved to catfish in the summer with his father, Charles, and nephews Chuck and Eddie. He was also in numerous golf and bowling leagues throughout the ‘80s and ‘90s, as well as several father and son leagues and tournaments with his son, John.
At the start of 2020, Miles’ health became increasingly worse and in mid-February, Kathy and John were unable to provide the care Miles required at home. Shortly after moving to a nursing home, COVID-19 forced nursing homes to go on lockdown, which prevented family visits. While the physical needs were being met at the nursing home, the emotional and financial stresses only continued to escalate. To make matters worse, COVID-19 also impacted Kathy’s employment as a hair stylist, which she had done for 50 years. With the pandemic closing the salon’s doors, for a then unknown length of time, and Kathy also reaching her physical limits to keep cutting hair for 8 to 10 hours a day – she had to retire.
While we recognize that many are under financial stress due to the COVID-19 pandemic and their own family needs, we are immensely thankful for any contribution you are able to provide.
Your donation will go towards the funeral arrangements. Of course, anything beyond this goal will go towards existing expenses related to Miles’ costs of care accrued by the family – which again – we are immensely thankful for.
