Memorial for Diane Martin

Diane Elizabeth Martin was born on September 22, 1960, in Stamford, Connecticut. In 1978, she lived in Rego Park, a neighborhood in the borough of Queens, New York, where she developed many of her fondest memories with friends and family. She and her sister Cathy raised their kids together in Margate, Fla, with the help of their mother Elizabeth. The family shared a love for Disney and always went on family vacations together.

Diane was an amazing mother to her children Allison and Charles, sister to Thomas and Cathy, and a wonderful aunt to her nieces and nephew Sierra, Shelby and Nick. We always had silly nicknames for her, which included Mama Dukes, Goose and Mamis. She loved spending her weekends watching cartoons with family, especially Looney Tunes. She was loved immensely by so many and was a firm believer of God.

As many of you may know, Diane loved her cats like they were her own children. Cinnamon, her beige and black tabby, was her “BABYGURL!”, as she would say. Cinnamon, Teddy, Lulu and Domino brought happiness to her daily. All her house décor had some form of cat theme, whether it was a painting, figurine, Christmas decoration, magnet, or something Lil Bub and Grumpy Cat related.

Another huge part of Diane’s life was her love for the band Heart. She went to countless concerts and was part of the devoted fan club Heart Mongers; she loved this community so much. She would meet with Facebook friends before or during Heart concerts and had a blast partying with them. She cherished all friendships, even those solely based online. The wonder and beauty of Diane lied within her ability to connect with people on so many levels. She loved giving advice, sharing her life experiences, and just being a friend to whom you can express your feelings.

Diane loved her family more than anything and looked forward to having get-togethers around the holidays. Her personal favorites included Halloween, Christmas, and 4th of July. She was so looking forward to having grilled hamburgers and hot dogs this year. We also bought fireworks for our new place in Coconut Creek, Fla.! She would always decorate the house with a plethora of decorations, especially for Christmas (she would go all out with her nutcracker collection).

Some of her absolute favorite things included the following: NASCAR (she loved seeing how fast the cars could go, and loved Jeff Gordon when he was a racer); I Love Lucy; movies with Humphrey Bogart, Clark Gable and Johnny Depp; Game of Thrones, the band Heart; the 1980s (the music and trends of that decade); Facebook; various Hanna-Barbera cartoons; watching the World News; Charlie Brown; classic Disney cartoons; Looney Tunes; Star Trek, The Twilight Zone; Svengoolie; and the list could go on!

Over these last few months, life wasn’t too easy for Diane. The pandemic caused unneeded stress. In the beginning of April, while unrelated to the pandemic, Diane had a stroke and was taken to Broward Health. It was a very scary and difficult time, as she was in the hospital for about five days and was not allowed to have any visitors. Luckily, she walked out with no serious brain damage or deficits that usually come with a stroke. She struggled daily with her knees, which caused her a lot of pain. She lived with diabetes, high blood pressure and arthritis. Although she had these struggles, she fought each day through the pain to do the absolute best for herself, her kids, cats, and rest of her family. She always cooked us delicious meals, cleaned around the apartment, and lived her life the best she could.

Unfortunately, Diane had a massive heart attack and passed away on July 4, 2020, at 12:15 a.m. She was 59 years old. It all took us by surprise, and it was unexpected. She was gone too soon, but she will never be forgotten.

We, Chaz and Allison, have a lot of planning to do. However, we cannot do it alone. We will be moving in November, and if you would like to make a donation in tribute to the memory of our mother, your love and generosity would be greatly appreciated. Anything helps, no matter how big or small. We will continue to honor our mother and the legacy she has left for her friends and family to cherish.

We greatly appreciate everyone’s love and support during this extremely difficult time.

Sincerely,

Allison & Chaz
