<div>During history research of our remembrance group, we located the final resting place of <strong>Corporal Richard I. Heard (S/N: 2037582)</strong>. A native of Wales and a veteran of the <strong>Bruneval Raid</strong>, he died in London in December 1943 from cancer, aged just 24. Returned to civilian life as a result of his illness, his burial was arranged by his elder brother in the midst of the Second World War. Richard Heard never married and left no children. Today, his grave remains unmarked, without even a simple headstone. With the agreement of the cemetery authorities, we now have the opportunity to place a modest memorial in his honour.

<div>Our remembrance group is based in Normandy, France. Our aim is to preserve and share the history of the men of the Bruneval Raid and to keep their memory alive. Among our honorary members are several families of British veterans who support our commemorative projects and whom we are honoured to welcome whenever they visit France. See below our website.

<div><strong>But who was Richard I. Heard?</strong>

<div>Richard I. Heard was born on 26 September 1919 in Blaenclydach, South Wales. He was named after his father, a respected local butcher. Tragically, in 1930, his father took his own life following serious business difficulties — the coroner reportedly described him as <em>“</em>another victim of bad times<em>”.</em>
</div>
<div>In October 1936, Richard I. Heard enlisted in the Royal Engineers. Five years later, in November 1941, he volunteered for airborne forces and joined 1st Air Troop RE, the very first parachute engineer unit, formed only days earlier. He was selected for Lieutenant Vernon’s detachment during the famous Bruneval Raid in France, where he assisted Flight Sergeant Cox in dismantling vital components of the German ‘Würzburg’ radar.

<div>On the night of 27–28 February 1942, then Lance-Corporal Heard took part in Operation Biting as a member of the “Jellicoe” Party — the assault group tasked with seizing the radar installation. During the withdrawal towards Bruneval beach, he was wounded in the left hand by enemy fire from the cliffs overlooking the retreating paratroopers. Despite his injury, he successfully returned to England, where he received treatment.

<div>Following Operation Biting, his unit became 1st Parachute Squadron RE. On December 1942, Heard fell seriously ill. He was <strong>discharged from service in</strong> <strong>May 1943</strong> and admitted to St George’s Hospital, Westminster, where his brother Percival cared for him during his final months. <strong>Richard I. Heard died on 30 December 1943</strong>.

<div>Today, more than eighty years later, the man who risked his life during one of Britain’s most daring wartime raids lies in an unmarked grave.

<div>This fundraising campaign aims to install a simple memorial boulder and commemorative plaque at his graveside, ensuring that his sacrifice and service are remembered with the dignity he deserves.

<div>Au cours des recherches historiques menées par notre groupe du souvenir, nous avons localisé où est enterré le caporal <strong>Richard I. Heard</strong>. Originaire du Pays de Galles et <strong>vétéran du raid de Bruneval</strong>, il est décédé à Londres en décembre 1943 des suites d'un cancer, à l'âge de 24 ans. Ayant repris une vie civile en raison de sa maladie, ses funérailles ont été organisées par son frère aîné en pleine Seconde Guerre mondiale. Richard Heard ne s'est jamais marié et n'a pas eu d'enfants. Aujourd'hui, sa tombe est anonyme, sans même une simple pierre tombale. Avec l'accord des autorités du cimetière, nous avons désormais la possibilité d'ériger un modeste mémorial en son honneur.

<div><strong>Qui était Richard Heard ?</strong>

<div>Richard I. Heard est né le 26 septembre 1919 à Blaenclydach, au Pays de Galles. Il portait le même prénom que son père, un boucher local très respecté. Malheureusement, en 1930, son père s’est donné la mort à la suite de graves difficultés financières — le légiste aurait décrit son suicide comme <em>« une nouvelle victime de la crise »</em>.

<div>En octobre 1936, Richard I. Heard s'engagea dans le Royal Engineers (Génie militaire britannique). Cinq ans plus tard, en novembre 1941, il s’engagea comme volontaire dans les forces aéroportées et rejoignit la 1st Air Troop RE, la toute première unité du Génie parachutistes, formée quelques jours auparavant seulement. Il fut sélectionné pour faire partie du détachement du lieutenant Vernon lors du célèbre raid de Bruneval en Normandie, où il aida le sergent Cox à démanteler les composants essentiels du radar allemand « Würzburg » installé sur La Poterie-Cap-d'Antifer.
