Melvin Gwanzura Funeral Fund

Our beloved Melvin - teacher, friend, teammate, and for Zion, partner and soulmate - passed away on Thursday 23rd April 2020, aged 43, a victim of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Melvin enriched every life he touched, bringing joy and laughter with a smile that made you feel like you'd won the lottery. His sharp intellect and wicked sense of humour was matched only by his huge heart - and his sense of style.

A devoted and passionate teacher, Melvin was Head of Psychology at St Charles Catholic Sixth Form College in Kensington, London. His passion was for volleyball, and he amassed a wealth of trophies and medals from tournaments around the UK.

For nearly a month, Melvin suffered from worsening Covid-19 symptoms, serious enough to warrant an ambulance attending on three separate occasions. By the time the third ambulance was called, on the 6 April, Melvin was coughing up blood. At hospital he was confirmed as suffering Covid-19. By the 8 April, blood clots caused Melvin to suffer a cardiac arrest, during which time his heart stopped for 17 minutes. The ICU doctors warned that he was unlikely to recover, but they would do everything they could for him; in his favour, he was young and healthy.

On the 15 April, doctors tried to wake Melvin, but he suffered seizures, which the consultant said indicated serious brain damage, caused by the cardiac arrest.

On 22 April, doctors confirmed that scans showed there was no brain activity, and that the best they could do was make Melvin comfortable until the end. At 4am on 23 April, Melvin's heart gave up and he passed away.

Born in Harare, Zimbabwe, he moved to London nearly twenty years ago. He leaves behind his loving family and friends, both in the UK and in his homeland; his younger brother Simbarashe, and Zion, his devoted partner of 15 years.

This GoFundMe is to fund his funeral and post-lockdown memorial; to give him the burial he deserves, so that his loved ones - and the many whose lives he touched - can visit him.

Melvin loved the quotation, "With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world." Right now it's hard to see any beauty in a world without Melvin, but if you were lucky enough to have had him in your life, you knew you were blessed.
