Funeral of Melvin Calero Mendoza

On October 13, 2022, Melvin, an asylum seeker and father of two, died while being detained by Immigration at the GEO detention center in Aurora, CO. The 36 year old was healthy and active with no pre-existing health conditions. ICE detained him for five and a half months in the facility. He never saw the United States. His siblings in the US wish to travel to Colorado to say goodbye to him and then send his body home to his mother in Nicaragua.

Like many other asylum seekers, Melvin was unnecessarily detained for five and a half months instead of being released to his loved ones in the US to attend court and find legal representation.

The money raised here will be used first to arrange flights and return Melvin's remains to his children and mother in Nicaragua. The community is calling for an independent investigation of his death. Any remaining funds will be used to uncover the facts of the circumstances leading up to Melvin's death. We will post updates here about how the funds are used.

El 13 de octubre de 2022, Melvin, solicitante de asilo y padre de dos hijos, murió mientras estaba detenido por Inmigración en el centro de detención GEO en Aurora, CO. El nunca miro a los EEUU como Inmigración lo mantenía detenido por cinco meses y medio. El hombre de 36 años estaba sano y activo sin condiciones de salud preexistentes. Sus hermanos en los EE. UU. desean viajar a Colorado para despedirse de él y luego enviar su cuerpo a casa con su madre y sus dos hijos en Nicaragua.
