Melvin Dryer’s Funeral

Who is Mel Dryer? He is a beautiful man with a tremendous heart. He has been known to be a man of great integrity, hardworking, loyal and respectful, with the best sense of humor. He was a lead singer in a Garage band called The Tropics in the 60’s which won the battle of the bands competition in 1966. They were signed to Columbia records and had huge success in the southern states during that time.
He then went on to become a contractor using his hands to build many beautiful additions to people’s homes along with fireplaces, cabinets, bookcases and even built one of our homes we lived in. Our father has always been a pillar of strength to all who knew him and especially to us. He has five children Devin, Lisa, Heather, Ashley, and Kallie. Regardless of his enormous strength he still allowed us to see the kinder and gentler side. Always willing to be a shoulder for us to cry on, eager to lend an ear just to hear about our problems. Our Dad has and will forever be our pillar of strength.
15 Years ago he fell 20’ off a building when he was working and shattered his left hip and pelvis requiring a hip replacement with steel plates and screws. This led to an extended hospital stay, physically therapy and enormous medical expenses. This forced our parents to sell their home which ultimately drained their life savings.
Years later our father then suffered a heart attack requiring open heart surgery with a triple bypass.
His physical condition was declining and suffered many losses in every way imaginable. Then began to exhibit issues with his fine motor skills, starting with the small things, like tying his shoes, using utensils, brushing his teeth and then onto the big things like: bathing himself, preparing meals, driving and even walking. Ultimately, things got so bad that he was unable to continue to work due to all his ailments. After many tests and numerous amount of doctor/specialist visits, it was concluded that our Dad was suffering from Parkinson’s disease and Dementia . Each one of these diseases on their own is terribly debilitating and there effect on the neurological system is destructive. However, coupled together they are an overwhelming force, seemingly impossible to beat. Unfortunately, this rapid intrusion has thrown him into a whirlwind and feels trapped within his own skin, his mind is sharp and quick, while his body is slow and frozen. Often times he was unable to move at his own will. Words cannot express how horrific it is to see a family member become a prisoner in their own body. We have seen how rapidly his health has declined, and for the longest time we have felt helpless.
The Time has come where God has called our father home. Now our mother has been left to burry her husband of 52 years, with the burden Funeral costs, ambulance rides and bills that have accumulated through these last difficult months.
