Mel's Medical Expenses

Mel didn’t have the best start to 2017. In early January she found a lump in her left breast. She had previously found other lumps in the past and thought that it would just be like the others, and not too serious. Her GP referred her for an ultra sound, mammogram and biopsy.
Two days later, Mel received a call from the doctor’s surgery that her results were back. On Friday 20th January 2017, she travelled to Hobart with her husband to see her GP. As soon as Mel sat down in her doctor’s office she knew the news wasn’t good. The doctor told her she had breast cancer, a Ductal Carcinoma in Situ. In typical Mel style (always worried about other people) she felt sorry for the doctor, having to tell a thirty year old she had breast cancer. Mel’s mother, Mary Palmer was diagnosed with breast cancer at 38 and sadly passed away four years later.
Mel had her first surgery on 8th February and another surgery on the 17th February to remove the malignant tissue in the breast and lymph nodes.
Mel needed both radiation and chemotherapy as a preventative measure however has made the very brave decision to have a double mastectomy and reconstruction. Mel is booked in for her first surgery on 26th July 2017 which is followed by another surgery scheduled for 7th August 2017. Mel’s private health insurance is unfortunately not paying for any of the cost. Medicare would cover the radiation and chemotherapy but because Mel has opted the alternative, she is out of pocket in the tens of thousands of dollars. Waiting on the public list is not an option and would leave Mel with having to have the radiation and chemotherapy.
Mel and her husband Kenyon are so thankful for the support already received and, the money donated has gone directly to paying the medical accounts from her surgeries earlier this year. This isn’t something you save and plan for. This GoFundMe page has been set up on Mel’s behalf to assist them during this difficult time financially so that it is one less thing for her and her husband to worry about.
