Support Melissa’s rehabilitation efforts.

Melissa was recently a passenger in a major vehicle accident involving a fatality. During the accident she received several serious injuries, including, 2 fractured vertebrae in her neck, 3 fractured vertebrae in her upper back, 4 fractured ribs, fractured sternum, ruptured spleen, ruptured kidneys, and ruptured liver. Her road to recovery is going to be a long one, several months, and she will need some help. The doctors are strongly recommending she go to an inpatient rehabilitation center for several weeks to ensure her spine heals correctly. Unfortunately, Melissa had recently started a new full time job and her insurance was not yet active, therefore she does not have coverage for this process. We are a proud, strong family of 10, and even with Melissa being 1 of 9 siblings we have never reached out for anything like this, but at this time this sweet baby girl could use a hand up. We want to make sure she receives the absolute best care possible and we need your help to do so. Thank you to anyone that can help, whether it be financially, or through prayer. God bless.

Update…

Last night was super tough for our little warrior. Her heart rate has been elevated at around 140 beats per minute. She was given chest X-rays earlier this morning to check for possible blood clots in her lungs and heart. They did not see anything in the X-ray but are planning another CT scan prior to her surgery at 9:00. Her lungs are also struggling to keep her O2 levels up. She had to be placed back on oxygen and is received breathing treatments. Both of her IV’s failed and she had to get new ones. Baby girl did not get much sleep. In surgery today they will be cleaning out the coagulated blood and now they plan on looking around at her other organs while they are in there. Her surgery should take around 3 hours now that they are expanding the scope. Please continue to pray for my princess while she battles all these setbacks. I feel like we are not out of the woods yet. Thank you all for your continued thoughts and prayers.

Update…

Surgery went okay. There was more blood, bile, and fluid in her abdomen than originally anticipated. The surgeon had to install a drain tube for her liver and for her spleen. They will observe her for the next 24hrs to see if everything is draining properly. If it is not draining properly, they will need to go back in and install a stint in the bile duct in her liver. My poor munchkin will be here for at least another week before she can move to a rehabilitation facility. Please continue to pray for her as she is not out of the woods yet. Thank you for all the thoughts and prayers! Everyone has been amazing! Thankful for the people we get to call friends and family! I will update again a little later.

Update…

Last night was another tough night for my little superstar. Surgery left her feeling weak and sore. They removed 3 liters of blood and bile during the surgery. Her drain on her liver has been steadily draining throughout the night. We are looking for the draining to stop some time today, but if it does not, she will need a stent in her bile duct. The drain on her spleen has been slow and bile free which is what we are looking for. Morning bloodwork didn’t look the best as her white blood cell count spiked and her red blood cell count dropped. The surgical team is recommending a blood transfusion that will take place sometime today. She is a little nervous about receiving a strangers blood but knows it is very necessary. Her heart rate has come down a bit but is still a little tachycardic. Her oxygen levels are steady and she only needs supplemental if she has any physical exertion. She is very tired today and I hope she is able to get some rest but quite a few teams of doctors are constantly poking on her. Please keep this little warrior in your prayers.

Update…

Last night was the toughest night so far. Melissa’s veins are really sore and she decided not to take the IV pain medication. She was in agony all night. Her bile drains have not stopped flowing and now surgery is almost a certainty. As soon as the doctors are able to take blood they will decide what time tomorrow the surgery will take place. They will need to go in through her upper GI tract and install a stent in her liver’s bile duct. This should channel the bile from her liver into her intestines rather than into her abdominal cavity. Hopefully this will prevent some pain as bile is acidic and causes great inflammation and irritation of tissue. Her fractures of the sternum and ribs are causing her the most discomfort because she is having great pain just breathing. Emotionally baby girl is really struggling, to be honest daddy is too, but I know she will fight on and I will never give up on her. Please continue to pray for her, the next few days are going to be very difficult. Thank you all for keeping us in your thoughts and prayers. God bless!

Update…

The last 24hrs have been a roller coaster for Melissa, the family, and I. It started with a great Easter morning for baby girl because she was able to go outside and get some fresh air. It continued to be an amazing day with improved numbers in all her testing, and an Easter egg hunt with all the siblings. Melissa’s brother in law Dilan Fountain even dressed as Easter Bunny and pranced around to cheer her up. The night ended with Melissa and I asleep by 11:30PM and not getting woken up until 6:00AM, making it the most continuous sleep either of us have had in 8 days. We woke up feeling a little refreshed and received great news, from GI doctors, that surgery was not needed. On top of this we received great news about her bloodwork results continuing to improve. Melissa and I were so happy, hugs and high fives given. We transitioned our minds into returning home. At about 10:41 today the Attending Surgeon, who is just returning from Holiday, came in to discuss the multiple surgeries that may be necessary to repair her liver and spleen. She informed us that the bottom of Melissa’s liver is “blown out” and may need a partial recectamy. Also, the 1” rupture of the spleen is vertical and is essentially staying squished open due the position Melissa must remain in for her neck and back to heal. This was an extreme shock to us all. At this point I was very upset as to why we are just hearing about this after 8 days and we were told there was a miscommunication. I was not happy about this at all and explained I want to see every test result… no more taking the doctors word without verifying. Heaven Lumbert and I explained everything to Melissa and got her calmed down and rested. We stepped out and upon returning we were met with a doctor who finally walked through all the scans and X-rays with us. Melissa is in very rough shape. Her first surgery for the stent is coming sometime today but right now off to a CTA scan. Please continue to pray for this baby girl… her recovery may have just gotten a lot longer.
