KENYA 2018

"Humanity is only as strong as its ability to stand united. When one is down, it takes another to help pick them up. This can mean as little as a simple act of kindness, to as big as a trans-global leap of faith."

As many of you know, this year has been full of transition for me as I moved from Miami where I completed my Internal Medicine residency, back to Philly where I started in July as a GI fellow. As I was preparing to leave Miami a few months ago, I was invited to tag along to a meeting for a medical missions trip that was being organized by a few key people from my Miami church. It didn't take long for the mission to speak to my heart and I found myself signing up without even knowing if my fellowship schedule would allow me to participate!

This trip will take a group of us to a rural area on the western coast of Kenya, Africa, where we will open up a pop-up medical clinic for about 6 days to care for approximately 3,000 people in the surrounding population - many of which have never had the opportunity to receive even routine medical care.

Our team will be operating a full medical clinic consisting of a triage area, pharmacy, rehab unit, and separate pediatric and adult clinics - which I will (of course!) be a part of. Beyond medical relief, we will be providing education on ways to improve their quality of life, including partnering with a local hospital, so that our impact lasts long after we are gone. We will also be providing a sports camp for the local kids while we are there (which is where all the best pictures come from ;)).

I have been so blessed in getting the green light for this to come together. As our November trip gets closer, I am reaching out to all of you for support in this incredible adventure. I never believed that becoming a doctor was just about fulfilling my own dream, it's about what I have to offer others. Usually that's in my work at the hospital in Philly, but occasionally it takes me to underserved populations in places like Uganda and Kenya. The group of us going on this trip believe in using the blessings we have been given to bring hope to people who need it most.

You can be a part of this mission by supporting me either via this page or directly at this link: https://www.missionkenya.net/volunteers-donors. Just include my name in the donation (and yours so I can thank you!) -- 100% of all donations will go directly towards the mission and are tax deductible through the 501c3 of the Big Foundation when donated through the link above.

THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH for your willingness to support and believe in Mission Kenya 2018!!

Love,

Melissa
